Writing
Formal writing will include Narrative Writing, Text Dependent Analysis Essays, and responses to reading.
Vocabulary/Spelling
Words will be introduced, reviewed, and assessed with each unit's stories.
Grammar, including parts of speech, will also be introduced, reviewed, and assessed within each unit.
Library
Our class will have book exchange in the library every Day "B". Students are required to bring an independent reading book to class daily.
At this time you should check out a novel for in-class SRT (SACRED READING TIME) if you don't have one.
Sacred Reading Time - SRT DAYS: B & D
Students will be provided a solid ten minutes to read from a book of their choice. Students will be held accountable for summarizations of their reading in an SRT log.
Scope Magazines
Students will have assignments due throughout each marking period from Scholastic Scope Magazine. Lessons/articles are chosen on interest level and are an excellent bonus to our curriculum. Students can access the magazine online with our classroom code, which is Horne.
Scholastic Book Orders
Parents: Interested in placing your child's Scholastic book order online? Our class activation code is: H6JHJ. Students may also bring in their order form and a check (made out to Scholastic) to me during class and I will place the order personally. Thank you!
Sacred Writing Time – SWT DAYS: A & C
Students will be provided a solid ten minutes to write about a topic of their choice or select from the options provided in class. We will also complete a journal that will be collected at the end of each marking period.
Daily Edits
The Daily Edits are an integrated way to teach language skills in context. They teach grammar, usage, mechanics, vocabulary, paragraphing, sentence structure, homophones, misspelled words and more, all within the context of a story. Students are given four sentences each week that need to be corrected. Students will also be taught proofreader’s marks. At the end of each month students will be assessed on five of the sentences we previously have reviewed.
Grading - Student grades are weighted and parents are urged to sign up to use the Sapphire Community Portal to monitor your child’s progress. Directions are on the district website under the Parents Tab – Community Portal Application and Acceptable Use Policy.
