1- Complete Driver Education Classroom Instruction (9 weeks / 30 clock hours)
If you miss 4 days of class, you must repeat the entire class the following quarter of school (you can miss 3 only)
Earning an A or B in class will allow me to administer a valid BTW (behind the wheel) driving test in the driver's ed vehicle
Earn a C or D in class? - You will still drive the school's driver's ed vehicle but you must take the BTW driving test with the IL Driver Services Facility.
2- Earn Your Driving Permit
Must pass the written exam (taken in class)
Must pass the eye test (taken in class)
Must have the application properly completed with all required signatures
$20 to Illinois Secretary of State (cash, check, or money order)
Must be 15 years old (No older than 17 years & 3 months old)
Instruction permit is valid for 2 years
Must hold the valid permit for at least 9 months before you can earn your driver's license at age 16
3- Drive with a parent/licensed driver who is at least 21-years-old (must have been licensed for at least 1-year)
Fill out your Driving Log (50 clock hours required / 10 of the 50 must be night-time driving hours)
Nighttime driving restrictions = Sunday-Thursday (10 pm to 6 am); and Friday-Saturday (11 pm to 6 am)
Number of passengers are limited to 1 in the front seat and the number of safety belts in the back seat.
Cell phone use while driving including a hands-free device, is prohibited for drivers under age 19
4- Drive the School's Driver's Ed Vehicle with an instructor (6 hours driving & 6 hours of observation are required)
Mr. Shasteen or Mr. White will schedule when you drive
$75 fee must be paid to the high school office prior to driving the school's vehicle
Pass your driving lessons and driving test
5- Once you turn 16-years-old, you may obtain your Illinois Driver's License
Go to the Driver Services Facility with a parent and bring your proper identification documents including 1 item from Group A, B, C and D (at least 4 items total)
Parent or legal guardian must certify that a minimum of 50 hours of practice driving, including 10 hours at night, has been completed.
Parent or legal guardian must accompany teen to provide written consent to obtain a driver’s license, OR complete and notarize an Affidavit/Consent for Minor to Drive form.
Must have completed a state-approved driver education course.
Nighttime driving restrictions — Sunday through Thursday, 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.; and Friday to Saturday, 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. (local curfews may differ).
Must maintain a conviction-free driving record for 6 months prior to turning 18 before moving to the Full Licensing Phase. A traffic conviction during the Initial Licensing Phase may extend restrictions beyond age 18.
All occupants must wear safety belts.
For the first 12 months of licensing, or until the driver turns 18, whichever occurs first, the number of passengers is limited to one person under age 20, unless the passenger(s) is a sibling, stepsibling, child or stepchild of the driver. After this period, the number of passengers is limited to one in the front seat and the number of safety belts in the back seat.
Cell phone use while driving including a hands-free device, is prohibited for drivers under age 19, except in the case of an emergency.
Texting while driving is prohibited.
