Course Description:
Throughout the next year we will explore different components of math. We will work with basic operations in order to improve our mathematical skills. Students will use different manipulatives and hands-on activities. Different teaching methods will be used so each student is able to gain the best understanding of middle school math.
1. Essentials for Class Each Day
Mechanical Pencil (this is extremely helpful to reduce crowding at the sharpener and less distracting)
3 Ring Binder with 3 sections
Planner (provided by school)
**Recommended** TI 30Xiis Calculator. We will be using this calculator later in the year and it is an EXCELLENT calculator for the price (around $12). These calculators will be provided for use in class but it can help to use the same one at home.
2. 3 Ring Binder: The 3 Ring Binder should be used for math only. One tab will be for the daily warmup, one for homework work, and the other for class notes. Notes should be dated, labeled with a title, and neat, including examples from class. There will be notebook checks throughout the school year as grades.
3. Grading: grading is done by total points and this will vary from marking period to marking period.
Homework/classwork: 5 points per assignment, 2.5 points if late (up to 1 day)
Quizzes: usually around 50 points
Tests/Projects: usually around 120 points
A= 100-90
B= 89-80
C= 79-70
D= 69-60
F= <60
4. Homework: Homework is an activity designed to supplement class work and develop skills in reading comprehension. It provides the student with the opportunity to practice and reinforce skills on an individual basis and therefore will be assigned most days (I try to avoid any homework on Friday unless it is an assignment that should have been completed in class). Homework will be checked the next day, and is due by the start of SCHOOL if it is to be turned in digitally. Late homework will only be accepted for ½ credit if handed in the next day. After that the student will receive a zero. In order for homework to be considered complete, work must be shown and every problem must be at least attempted. No work, no credit - no attempt, no credit. All math work must be completed in PENCIL. Students who miss class for any reason (absence, band, late to school, etc.) are responsible for getting notes and checking in with me as soon as possible. If a student is in school but does not show work due that day it will be marked as a zero.
5. Absence: Students have the number of days they are absent to make up the work they missed. If a student will miss class for a band lesson or other pull out they must check in with me first and that is not considered an absence, they must still have their homework on the assigned due date.
