ENGLISH

Course: English IV

Prerequisite: English I, II, III, or Equivalent

Description: This course is designed to prepare students for both the workplace and post-secondary education. Students will read literary works, both classic and contemporary. They will engage in academic writing, literary analysis, and research, as well as participate in academic discussions.

Description: English II continues to build upon the skills taught in English I and to prepare students to advance to English III. Students will study various literature, writing, grammar, and vocabulary skills throughout the course. A variety of literary forms, both fiction and non-fiction, will be examined, and students will learn and utilize the criteria needed to interpret and critically analyze a variety of texts. Students will also learn the proper procedure in constructing essays, will focus on improving listening and speaking skills, and develop composition skills through the study of research processes.

Description: English 1 is a comprehensive English course of literature, composition and language, including listening and speaking. We will read a wide variety of literary forms including short stories, nonfiction, poetry, drama, novels and spoken and visual texts. This course also focuses on the writing and research process through response to literature, creative writing, connections to real-life situations and problem solving. The study of language, mechanics, grammar and conventions will be integrated throughout our studies. Students will work individually, in partners and groups to think logically and produce papers, projects and presentations to showcase understanding and comprehension. Listening and speaking skills are also developed throughout the course.


Course: Film and Literature

Description: This course focuses on contemporary and classic literature, a variety of genres, and how literary works are transformed into films. The focus will be to enhance the ability to understand, appreciate, and discuss works of literature through extensive reading and discussion of novels and literature, as well as analyze works of fiction and drama for plot structure, setting, characterization, theme, and narrative point of view.

Description: In this course, several novels will be read and analyzed. Students should expect to read on a daily basis. Through the study of novels, vocabulary and critical thinking will be developed, in addition to reading skills. Distinct features of the novel, such as narrative and fictional elements of setting, conflict, plot structure, character development, climax, and resolution will be studied. Students will read, analyze, evaluate, critique, and actively respond to a wide variety of literary genres. The course also includes reading selections from non-fiction that supplement the novels with background information, and provide students with the opportunity to practice reading non-fiction text. Activities to develop writing and research skills are included as well.

Course: Creative Writing

Description: Primary focus on giving students a skill set to tap into their own creativity. Opportunities for students to explore their creative strengths, develop a vocabulary with which to discuss their own creativity, and experiment with the craft and adventure of their own writing. Through lecture, discussion, reading and writing exercises, and critiques of student writing in a workshop mode, students will examine critically the elements of literary creations.


MATH

Course: Algebra 2

Description: This algebra course allows the student to use problem solving, visual learning, big ideas, interactive learning and differentiated instruction to master the Algebra 2 State Standards for mathematics. We will be using Eureka Math, along with an Algebra 2 textbook.


Course: Real World Math

Description: Math is widely-used in daily activities and in most careers, and in this course you will:

1.Discover how math is used in sports.

2.Learn the importance of math when buying a car.

3.Learn how to create and maintain a budget.

4.Explore how math is used in every profession.

5.Explore outdoor math activities.

NOTE: This class is designed for Juniors and Seniors who do not intend to go the college route. It is offered as an alternative to Algebra 2.


Course: Math Analysis

Prerequisite: Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2

Description: Math Analysis is intended as a preparatory course for College Algebra. If you struggled with some topics in Algebra II, but plan to take College Algebra at some point, this class will be an ideal fit for you. We will closely follow the College Algebra contents, but move at a slower pace to ensure that it sinks in. This class is one semester only, but you should be well prepared to enter College Algebra the next semester.


Course: Trigonometry

Prerequisite: Geometry and Algebra II

Description: Trigonometry an extension of the concepts learned in Geometry regarding the trig functions sine, cosine, and tangent. This is a semester-long course which will begin by solving right triangles for unknown sides and angles and build into more advanced topics. Trigonometry is perhaps the most useful of the math topics covered in high school and has many applications in real life. A working knowledge of trigonometry can be a time saver for anyone working in construction, surveying, engineering, science, or related fields.


Course: Statistics

Prerequisite: Algebra II

Recommended Grade Level: 11-12

Duration: Semester

Description: The study of statistics is the process of drawing good, reliable conclusions from incomplete information. This is done by looking at the distribution of a sample from a population. It also includes probability theory/distribution, estimation, hypothesis testing and analyzing correlations.


Course: Geometry

Prerequisite: Algebra 1

Recommended Grade Level: 10-11

Description: This course is designed to emphasize the study of the properties and applications of common geometric figures in two and three dimensions. It includes the study of transformations and right triangle trigonometry. Inductive and deductive thinking skills are used in problem solving situations, and applications to the real world are stressed. It also emphasizes writing proofs to solve (prove) properties of geometric figures.


Course: Algebra 1

Prerequisite: 8th Grade Math

Description: This course is designed to emphasize the study of multiple representations of linear and non-linear functions. It includes mathematical concepts for working with rational numbers, various expressions, analyzing and solving linear equations & inequalities, data analysis, probability, statistics, and polynomials.

Description: Chemistry I is a more rigorous science course that involves compounds, ions, bonding, reactions, energy, and math. Students will use the periodic table and incorporate that into everyday learning activities.

HISTORY


Course: American Government

Description: This class studies the federal government, the structure and function of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches and the growth of power at the national and state levels. An emphasis is placed on the role and responsibility of the citizen. Students will study the events of state and national importance presently taking place and how these current events relate to the workings of the U.S. Government. Students must take and pass the federal constitution and state constitution exams required by the state of Missouri in order to graduate.


Course: American Heritage

Prerequisite: American History, World History, Government

Description:

This course concentrates on U.S history from colonization to present day. The focal point will be on events, trends, and activities that shape American culture throughout history. We will not only cover historical documents throughout history, but we will cover aspects of American culture that define what it is to be an "American." Topics will include music, film, fashion, sports, holidays and changes in society.


Course: United States Civil War

Prerequisite: American History

Duration: Semester

Description: This course will explore the political, social, and economic causes, conduct, and consequences of the United States Civil War. Students will examine the history of slavery in the United States, the sectional conflict over slavery, multiple reasons for the Civil War, and the major events of the Civil War and the period of Reconstruction. Much of the study comes from the years 1844-1877, although some events will fall outside that time range.


Course: Popular Culture

Description: The purpose of the course is to allow students to look more deeply and more critically at events with which they might have a passing exposure; and to challenge students to examine their current culture for its possible historical consequence. This class will look at recent American history (1960’s to present) through the lenses of music, media (can include movies, TV, internet, etc.), major news stories and how they were covered, popular consumer goods, and ideology/social movements. Students will also discuss current events and their connection to items of study.

Course: Computer Applications

Description: Students will have the opportunity to learn basic computer knowledge, proper keyboarding techniques and skills, apply formatting, use word processing applications (Word), spreadsheets applications (Excel), database applications (Access), presentation software (Powerpoint), experience in creating business documents (Publisher), explore the internet, and create a web page (Publisher). Students will be expected to take times writings and improve their speed and accuracy throughout the year.

Description: Students will learn to create/access, organize, analyze and communicate information using the computer. The course will assist students in developing those abilities identified as the following (a) problem-solving, and creative inquiry, (b) information - gathering, reasoning, and synthesizing abilities; © reflective, creative, and critical disposition; and (d) communication skills.


Course: Introduction to Computer Science

Description: This course is designed to offer an introduction to computer science for students in grades 9-12. Students will learn the basics of computer programming along with the basics of computer science. The material emphasizes computational thinking and helps develop the ability to solve complex problems. This course covers the basic building blocks of programming along with other central elements of computer science and gives a foundation in the tools used in computer science. The course is 100% coding, and allows students to work independently in text-based Python. The course also includes a career focus, where at the end of units, students meet (via videos) individuals from different industries who work in coding (medical, music, etc.). No prior computer science knowledge or experience is necessary for this course.

Description: Mass Media is a PBL-style course that will provide students with hands-on experiences with current technology and its real-world application. A wide range of current hardware and software will be explored. Description: Ag Construction will be a lab based course sharing time with in class activities. Upon completion of a test based knowledge assessment, we will typically go to the shop for a short time and practice the skills learned in the classroom. All classroom rules and expectations are the same for the shop. Understand that there are no guarantees for the amount of shop time received, this will be based on the attitudes and participation level while learning a skill first in the classroom. Once the shop tools and their functions are understood, each student will be required to build a project to completion. Materials used for personal projects must be purchased by the student from a business or the Sparta Ag Shop.


Course: Greenhouse

Prerequisite: Ag Science I

Recommended Grade Level: 10-12

Duration: Year Long

Description: Greenhouse Operations consists of learning the different types of greenhouse layouts and designs and how they operate. Additionally, students will help with the management decisions of the greenhouse including ordering bedding plant plugs and seed, vegetable seed, and all other supplies needed to grow a product. Students will also help with the annual Greenhouse Sale after growing the product.


Course: Animal Science

Prerequisite: Ag Science I

Description: Animal Science takes a deeper look into the world of Animal Agriculture that was introduced in Ag Science I. Students dive deeper into the genetic and reproduction side of animal agriculture as well as a more detailed look at nutrition and roles each play in animal health. This is a very hands on class and we have a few small trips each year and typically two dissections.

Description: Ag Science I is designed to be a broad spectrum agricultural class covering many different topics related to Agriculture Careers, Animal Science, and the FFA. Along with animal reproduction and management we will spend time covering animal health, breed identification, feeds and feeding, FFA history, parliamentary procedure etc. As part of this curriculum each student will be required to memorize and recite the FFA creed in front of the class. This will need to be done by Christmas break in order to receive credit. This can be done one paragraph at a time with no point deductions. In the past, the Fourth quarter of this class will spend most of their time learning how to Arc weld and use the oxy/acetylene torch. This will be dependent of the class and their willingness to learn and follow the safety procedures required.

Description:This is a semester course designed to introduce students to basic food preparation skills and an understanding of how proper nutrition relates to overall wellness. Students will learn food preparation skills as well as how to maintain a safe and sanitary cooking environment. Methods of instruction will include textbook, supplemental materials, Powerpoint Presentations, demonstrations, and videos. Students will be able to apply these skills through application and lab procedures.

Description: ProStart Culinary Arts is available for upperclassmen who have taken a prerequisite course of Foods I. Pro Start is a program that certifies our students through the National Restaurant Association and articulates credit with Ozarks Technical College for up to six hours credit. Students also become Safe Food certified through the Christian County Health Department. The goal of this class is to make them workplace ready. Description: This instructional program describes the design and implementation of policies and processes contributing to successful individual and family resource management. Parental styles and leadership patterns are examined. The course also includes instruction in financial goal setting and strategies; household income, assets, and debt management; preventing and resolving financial difficulties; and the use of relevant public resources. A real estate unit is also included to help the student prepare for buying or selling a home. Retirement and investment plans are also discussed.

Description: This is a one semester (1/2 credit) course, designed to introduce learners to child development, beginning with prenatal development. Students will learn about preparing for pregnancy, prenatal development, child birth, infant development, toddler development, and the young child. Topics will include the development and behaviors of infants and young children, through the study of physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development. Students will gain knowledge about the successful care of children, including developmentally-stimulating environments that promote learning. This course is designed for all students, regardless of career choices.

Description: This is a semester course designed to educate students on issues involved in child development from the ages of birth to 5 years of age. The course begins with topics related to how children develop, what expectations they need to meet, and what they will learn as the grow. Students will participate in the preschool with children.

MUSIC


Course: Band

Prerequisite: Middle School Band

Description: High school band is a class that continues the journey of musicians that started in middle school. This is a performance based class and so all performances are graded and it’s important that everyone is at every performance. We perform for pep band, concerts and for state contest. You do have the option of trying out for District Band through an audition process and performing at District & State solo/ensemble contest.


Course: Choir

Prerequisite: A desire to sing

Description: Choir is a non-audition, Fine Arts class focused on the development of singing as a group and as a soloist. Many performing opportunities are offered, including: Veterans Day, Winter and Spring concerts, Large Ensemble Contest, District and Honor Choirs, and Solo and Ensemble.


Course: Music Appreciation

Description: Music appreciation is a fine art class that takes a more social approach to music than a historical approach. We will go into how music affects musicals, operas and films in different ways. We do study and have projects including composers, different types of music and the periods of music. This class should engage you to think, hear and study music and musical concepts that are not necessary in your comfort zone but should give you an appreciation of all music.

Description: Art I is designed to fulfill the fine art graduation requirement. Art production is the main focus of the course with an emphasis on visual literacy. Students will produce art using a variety of media as well as explore art history, criticism and aesthetics. Students are expected to keep a daily sketchbook, complete art projects, write art reviews and pass quizzes and tests.

Prerequisite: Grade of B- or higher in Art I or recommendation of 8th Grade Art Teacher

Description: Art IV is an advanced class that focuses on portfolio development. Students will produce art using a self-chosen theme in a variety of media. They will explore art history, criticism and aesthetics as well as research art schools and careers in the arts. Students are expected to keep a daily sketchbook, complete art projects, write art reviews, pass quizzes and tests and participate in formal critiques of their own and others artwork. Completion of a final portfolio and artist’s statement is required.


Course: Art Independent Studies

Prerequisite: Art IV (Seniors may take IS and Art IV during the same year.)

Description: Independent Studies is an advanced class that focuses on portfolio development, professional presentation and college preparation. Students will produce art using self-chosen themes and media. They will explore art history, criticism and aesthetics as well as research art schools and careers in the arts. Students are expected to keep a daily sketchbook, complete art projects, write art reviews, pass quizzes and tests and participate in formal critiques of their own and others artwork. Completion of a final portfolio, artist’s statement, college application and gallery show is required. Due to the individualized nature of the course, it may be repeated multiple years.

Description: The aim of this class is to help students refine and expand their writing skills. Many types of writing and essays are studied and composed including: expository, persuasion, description, compare/contrast, opinion, literary analysis, and personal narrative. Students will also complete research writing using MLA documentation, and analyze and evaluate sources for reliability. Sentence structure and sentence variety are emphasized, along with integration of thinking, reading, writing, listening, and speaking. This is a dual credit course through Ozarks Technical Community College.
