Brief Description: A QR code is a scannable barcode-like image functioning as a link. QR stands for “Quick Response”. The image contains a unique configuration of square dots providing information for the user such text or links to files, videos, or websites, and so much more. QR codes offer safety for teachers and students because students are only able to access what has been linked to the QR code. There is no charge to create QR codes on any device and they can be used to direct students to sites that are helpful. Teachers can attach these codes to lessons, documents, websites, presentations, and activities for additional resources. These codes are popularly used for stations, learning centers, and gallery walks. Students only need to use an app or extension to access their devices camera to scan the codes.

Educational Benefits: Teachers can spend more time facilitating and students can learn independently or collaboratively by immersing students in guided tasks through the codes. Create engagement through video, screen capture, digital games, audio directions, interactive presentations, or warm-ups. The level of resources and higher-order skills is decided upon by the teacher. “Mobile technology allows for deeper exploration of content and higher-order thinking skills, teachers have increased mobility in the room to assist students, increase in students’ social interaction, and building on collaborative learning” (QR Codes in the Classroom, 2011).

Differentiation Application: During a reading lesson, students are usually instructed to annotate particular passages for text features. If a few students require a lower-level of reading with audio for easier comprehension, teachers can discreetly accomplish this using QR codes. The whole class is reading the same material and struggling students don’t feel embarrassed. QR codes can also be used to share digital copies containing annotation tools for students to create notes using their devices.

ISTE Standards: QR Codes address the ISTE-S Knowledge Constructor standard by using mobile devices for curating resources that link to teacher notes on a particular strategy to applied with an activity, open-ended questions, entry/exit tickets, or an app containing an interactive lesson.

Considerations: QR codes must be planned carefully and tested thoroughly before use. Internet links and documents must be checked and videos must be previewed for content. QR code testing ensures that students are not being led to inappropriate sites, materials, and advertisements. Students can scan QR codes through various devices with cameras such as Chromebooks, phones, pads, and tablets.
