Dyslexia Program
Every Southside campus has selected specific reading programs which follow state guidelines to meet the special needs of your child. Schedule a meeting with your child’s classroom teacher to discuss the benefits of the program offered.
2017-2018 Southside ISD Dyslexia Plan
Read books about dyslexia. Become as knowledgeable about the subject as possible.
Emphasize your child’s strengths.
Read aloud to your child every day at his or her appropriate level.
Keep instructions simple. Give one direction at a time. Ask your child to repeat instructions aloud to check for understanding.
To help with homework, provide a quiet place with materials (books, papers, pencils, pens, dictionary) ready for your child.
If necessary, read assignments to your child and check for understanding.
Act as your child’s secretary by recording assignments as your child dictates them to you.
Help your child plan break times.
Stay in contact with your child’s teacher. Be aware of modifications occurring in the classroom.
Seek alternative assignment methods such as computer, tapes, and oral reports rather than writing.
