National Library Week
Librarian, Laura Zarsky, loves to look back over her calendar to recall the accomplishments for the year and set new goals for next year. Skypes are a common event in the library. We have visited a Seal Rookery on the beaches of California, an excavation site in Greece, and museums across the country. We have had authors, Stacey Horan and Nikki Loftin, visit our students virtually. Students have participated in Friday Reading Campouts, Library Club, and Book Club. Losoya Library entered the 90 Second Newbery Film contest for the second year and got great comments from Newbery author Adam Gidwitz. Hour of Code, Santa's MakerSpace, Donors Choose Grant, and a Skype a Scientist Live Chat series have rounded out our year. Looking forward to next year: Crochet Club - beanie making for chemo patients, Word Collector's Club, and a Current Events club are some our future plans.
Librarian, Carla Rodriguez, has started a Southside Trend... in "Girls Who Code." This is a club of 50 girls who meet once a week to learn coding skills through hands on color coding with Ozobots to working on Scratch.com. The girls are having so much fun and the boys are begging to get in on this. Sorry boys... this time it's Girls Only!
Congratulations to Certified Librarian, Cheryl Conoly, for being nominated by Southside HS staff as teacher of the year. After all, librarians are teachers of the biggest classrooms on campus. #LibrariansMatter Way to go, Cheryl.
Certified Librarian, Rebecca Santos, is super excited to begin a new club at Gallardo Library. She will soon be starting another "Girls Who Code" club to give girls STEM Power! We look forward to seeing her club get underway soon.
Students at Freedom and Gallardo Elementary got to vote for their favorite BlueBonnet Book. Students at Freedom were even required to register to vote and received a voter registration card before they voted on the ChromeBooks. Real-World learning is going on everyday in our Libraries. #SouthsideLibrariansRock
QR codes rock when it comes to reading. Mr. Zarsky has created class sets of digital reading for ELA classes. Students can now use the ipads or Chrome Books to access these books just by snapping a picture of the QR code. Teachers can also assign one of these books to all of their students to read at the same time... a new way to teach a class novel.
Award Winning Author, Nikki Loftin, has volunteered to meet with Losoya Students who are reading Wish Girl in Mrs. Canupp's ELA class. Mrs. Loftin was humbled to hear that this teacher purchased books with her own money so her students could enjoy it as a class. Losoya Library will host the virtual visit via Skype and we will end with a Literary Celebration for such a wonderful accomplishment.
Mrs. Conoly is headed to your classroom. She has just finished round one of teaching research skills. Round two is about to begin. This librarian isn't waiting for you to come ask for help... she is out and about bringing her researching expertise to you. Evaluating resources, writing bibliographies, using Easy Bib to cite your sources... listen up, students, these are THE SKILLS your will need for success in college.
Mrs. Zarsky has caught the Skyping Bug and is on a quest to take virtual field trips across the world. We've been to Point Lobos Kelp Reserve to learn about the ecosystem from a park ranger in his kayak, Antarctica to see the Adelie penguins nest, and the Hearst Castle. We have talked with numerous authors about the writing process, and been to many museums across the country. We are also taking part in a new series "Skype a Scientist Live" where we get to connect with professionals and learn about their fields of study. And you thought Librarians only checked out books.
