South Seattle College CTE Overview

South Seattle College's Continuing Education offers flexible, affordable preparation classes for those working toward their Career & Technical Education Certification (CTE) in Washington State. Additionally, South’s program is an approved Plan II "Business and Industry" course of study for secondary teachers leading to the initial state teaching certificate by the Washington State Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI).

South’s program is designed to give individuals independence in the program through classes arranged with the working professional in mind, as well as online classes that offer greater flexibility. Core classes are offered each quarter to meet the needs of prospective teachers, and teacher candidates may start any quarter of the year.

What is CTE?

A Career and Technical Education (CTE) certificate is a classroom teaching certificate that authorizes the holder to teach a specific subject in a middle or high school setting, in a career and technical education program. Examples of the occupations that CTE programs prepare high school students for include electrician, professional photographer, auto mechanic, jobs in aerospace or biotech. The CTE teacher typically has extensive paid work experience in the CTE subject areas in which they are teaching.

CTE programs in Washington are aligned with the rigorous industry and academic standards. Teachers in CTE not only participate in meaningful professional development on curricula and instruction, standards and assessment, and academic integration, but they also work on program partnerships and advisories to communicate this vision. CTE certified educators engage students with the real-world data, utilize current industry related tools and criteria, plus collaborate with the experts the students will encounter in college, on the job, and in life.

At South Seattle Community College, our goal is to prepare outstanding teachers. Through our CTE certification program, we train teachers how to prepare this generation of students to meet the multi dimensional abilities required of them in the 21st century.
