Thurston High School Course Descriptions

Concert Choir (1st period)

This is a year-long, beginning/intermediate, SATB (male and female voices) ensemble. The core curriculum emphasizes the basics of vocal technique, sight reading, music history, and music theory. Concert Choir members will participate in Michigan School Vocal Music Association (MSVMA) festivals. Repertoire will include beginning/intermediate selections from the Renaissance to today’s popular music. This is a performing ensemble. All after school rehearsals and performances are mandatory, and make up a significant portion of the student’s grade. No audition is required.


Chamber Choir (2nd period)

This is a year-long, advanced, SSAA (female voices) ensemble. The core curriculum emphasizes advanced vocal technique, sight reading, music history, and music theory. A high level of vocal independence (ability to sing parts without little or no assistance) is required to ensure the success of all students. Chamber Choir members will participate in Michigan School Vocal Music Association (MSVMA) festivals. Repertoire will include advanced selections from the Renaissance to today’s popular music. This is a performing ensemble. All after school rehearsals and performances are mandatory, and make up a significant portion of the student’s grade. Membership in this ensemble requires instructor approval.
