Welcome to 6th Grade Social Studies
Our sixth-grade social studies curriculum is aligned with the state standards for social studies. This year, we will begin the year with map skills & geography. We will also study Europe, East, and Southeast Asia. Current events will also be included when relevant.
Social Studies Grading Policy
Performance Assessments 70%: (tests, quizzes, long writing assignments, projects)
Learning Activities 30%: (classwork, practice problems, checks for understanding, short written assignments)
Homework: Will NOT be graded (Marked complete or incomplete in Powerschool)
Multiple-night homework (usually projects or maps) will have points deducted for each day the assignment is late.
All grades will be posted in a timely manner on PowerSchool. * Students and parents may monitor grades at any time online through the Parent Portal of Power School. This is encouraged in order to stay current with student progress.*
Be prepared for class!
Class Supplies:
You will need the following materials for social studies class:
S.S. folder
Chromebook
Writing tool, colored pencils, and a highlighter
IRB (Independent reading book)
Homework:
Homework is essential in reinforcing the knowledge or skills being taught within our classroom. It is also an opportunity to finish in-class activities, conduct research on S.S. topics and study for assessments. It is important that homework is completed in an efficient and timely manner. Failure to complete your homework on time will disqualify you from reteach opportunities on assessments and the ability to participate in some class activities.
Absences:
If you miss class, there are three ways you can find your assignment:
Check Canvas
Check Mrs. Cap's HW Calendar
Check the folder in S.S. class when you return
Missed handouts will be in your class period’s folder with an “Absent Work” slip explaining the activities completed that day. These assignments are expected to be completed by the next day. Work for students with extended absences will be handled individually.
Work that was due the day you were absent will be collected when you return to school. If you are absent on the day of a quiz or test, you will make up the quiz or test the day you return to school.
