All band members need a lesson book, an instrument, and a pencil. Some instruments require other specialized accessories. A full list including suggestions on where to obtain these items is provided in the Documents tab.
There is no charge for the class but students must provide their own instrument, supplies, and lesson book. Rental options, low income options, and other information is provided in the Documents tab of this website.
We ask that all students practice at home on their instrument on a regular basis. The ideal amount varies from student to student but to start with we recommend at least 1-2 hours of home practice spread out through the week as 15-20 minute long sessions. If a student cannot commit to that much practice time then their parents should reevaluate whether being in band is right for them.
While we know some students are busier than others there is a simple fact that we have a very limited amount of direct instruction time at school (one 20 minute small group lesson each week). Because of this it is absolutely essential that all students be encouraged to practice at home on a regular basis in order for them to reinforce the learning that we accomplish in class. Otherwise by the next week they have forgotten much of what they learned.
We have one concert each year in April. It is normally held in the high school auditorium and are considered an essential part of the student's experience of being in the band.
Band For All is an instrument loan program for students on free or reduced cost lunch plans. BFA instruments are instruments that have been donated to the program by members of the community. If you have an old instrument in good working condition and would like to donate it to this program please contact the band directors. Tax deductible receipts are available from the district for those who donate instruments or funds to the program.
