For new students who come from areas of disrupted education, they may also be given a Battista math assessment to determine their current level of learning in the area of math.
EL students who score two or more grade levels below their age level peers on the Battista math assessment are enrolled in their grade level math class, as well as an EL math class taught by an ESOL teacher. The EL Math class focuses on the major areas of study for each grade and students progress through the learning levels at their own rate. Typically, EL students progress at a rate of 2-3 years of learning in one year of EL math instruction. Once these students have mastered any gaps they have had in instruction, they continue to be supported by their ESOL teacher in learning English, and are phased out of EL Math.
