Laboratory

The Sustainable Asphalt Materials (SAM) Laboratory was initiated in 2017, located in Room 146 of Science Laboratory Building (old engineering building).

Address: 6041 USA Dr N., Mobile AL, 36608

The SAM laboratory are adequate for performing all asphalt binders, aggregates, and asphalt mixture testing, including:

Anton Paar® Dynamic Shear Rheometer: True performance grading, multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR), frequency sweep, linear amplitude sweep, 4-mm monotonic fracture test, AASHTO T315, T350, M320, ASTM D7552, air bath controlled temperatures ranging from -20 to 200 °C;

Cannon® Thermoelectric bending-beam rheometer (TE-BBR) Pro: Accurate temperature controlled bath down to -40°C, controlled and totally programmable stress rate, adjustable sample thickness of 6.35 to 12.7 mm;

Brookfield® Rotational Viscometer: viscosity at high temperatures, AASHTO T316.

Binder extraction and Abson recovery, AASHTO T170. ASTM D2172, D1856

Aging: 300 μm Universal Simple Aging Test (USAT);

Falling head permeameter;

Superpave mix design: AASHTO M 323;

Cantabro loss: durability and abrasion resistance of asphalt mixes;

MTS materials testing system: AASHTO T283, T313, T322;

Troxler Model 4141 Gyratory Compactor – fully automated gyratory compactor for consistent, repeatable results, used for asphalt mixture specimens;
