Workshop on Open Educational Documents, Technologies, and Research
2024 May 7-9 (in-person event May 6 evening)
University of South Alabama (Mobile, AL) and Virtual
The future of accessible and equitable education in the United States depends upon the creation and maintenance of open-source educational documents and technologies, enabling new avenues for educational research. These resources are not only provided freely to the nation's students and instructors, but can also be adapted to meet the evolving needs of new users. However, even when creators share open-source content, new users may face unintended challenges related to hosting technologies for materials, unclear or incomplete documentation, and other factors. To this end, we are organizing a hybrid conference focused on the effective development and sharing of open-source resources resulting from STEM education research and development efforts. Over three days, content creators and technology experts will undergo training on open-source platforms, discuss best practices for managing user communities, and explore technologies for authoring open-source products. STEM education researchers will actively participate in these discussions and also explore optimal methods for conducting learning experiments and other studies using open educational resources, such as digital textbooks, assessments, and activities.
This NSF-funded hybrid workshop will prepare select teams of scholars to develop high-impact projects that advance the scholarship of undergraduate mathematics and computer science education using open-source and open-licensed documents and technologies. Both in-person and virtual teams will be supported in developing projects that are in alignment with the NSF Improving Undergraduate STEM Education solicitation.
CoTL|2024: The 14th Annual South Alabama Conference on Teaching and Learning
This workshop will be held concurrently with CoTL|2024, a hybrid conference hosted by the University of South Alabama and organized by its Innovation in Learning Center. Some workshop programming will be made available to all CoTL participants; likewise, workshop participants will have the opportunity to network with other CoTL participants during meals and social events.
