The Art of Child Study with Anouk Tompot
Where is the book in which I can read how and what to teach the children? This is something every teacher would love to just have on their shelf. The answer is that such a book does not exist. The books are the children themselves and we will have to learn to read them. This is one of the most essential tasks of a Waldorf teacher. The entire curriculum is formed out of this art of child observation. The practice itself, when done well, will develop new organs of perception within the teacher which are essential in understanding the children and knowing what and how to teach.

In a world that is constantly changing and challenging what it means to be human, it is heartwarming to know that Waldorf early childhood education creates a safe and sacred vessel for the young child’s gradual unfolding. The Waldorf early childhood teacher’s full loving presence in the care of the young child’s life forces and developing will, supports the child to feel at home in their bodies and the world.
The easiest way to school yourself in this art is to practice with others. Traditionally this technique is called a “Child Study” in the Waldorf Movement. In those meetings the child becomes the focus of observation by the faculty. The process is divided in three stages:
Forming a picture of the child
Enquiring into the causes
Finding helpful measures
In this 3-day course, we will explore these three stages through practical and artistic methods in a self-aware way.
Anouk Tompot, a daughter of two teachers, has been a teacher for over 30 years, serving children from age 0-19 and adults. She has a deep love for human development, which started as a biology graduate student leading to a lifelong fascination with embryological development as a modern creation myth of ancient archetypes. Along with Psychosynthesis and Anthroposophy, these are the backdrops of her work. In addition to her work with Sound Circle Center, she also teaches parent and child classes and guides parents in her private practice as a Psychosynthesis and Biographical Life Coach.
“We should not learn to teach out of any book other than the one lying open before us and consisting of the children themselves.” ― Rudolf Steiner
Coffee, tea, and generous snacks will be provided each day. This course is being offered in conjunction with Sound Circle Center’s Teacher Training Program, providing participants the opportunity to visit with students and faculty members.
