Day 1: August 30th
Day 1: August 30th
OPD Reading Kickstarts The FG Assembly
August 30th, 2022 marks the start of the 3rd edition of the FG Assembly. This year's edition brings 4 themes for debate, them being BREXIT (British Exit of the European Union), Genetic Manipulation, the creation of the State of Palestine, and the occurrences in Ukraine. The debates will be happening in Fernão Gaivota School from today (Tuesday, August 30th) until Friday, September 2nd.
After an opening presented by the event's organizers, the delegates, staff, and journalists were sent to their respective committees. Following the opening, there was a simulation for the participants to get acquainted with the flow of the debates. In the BREXIT committee, the discussion was about gender violence, however, the debates were cut short due to a tight schedule. Following a short break, the reading of the delegation's OPDs (Official Positioning Document) regarding the BREXIT began. Delegations seem to be divided into 3 groups: the ones in favour of the BREXIT, which include the United States of America and South Korea, countries that have a more neutral approach regarding the subject, which include Italy, Portugal, Spain, and China, and the ones against the BREXIT, which include France, Belgium, and Ireland. Germany claims to support a “Soft BREXIT”, meaning that they want a more gradual and planned BREXIT.
The different opinions brought to the committee by the different delegations make way for certainly interesting, important, and remarkable debates, which shall be occurring in the following days.
Day 2: August 31st
FG Assembly's 2nd Day Marks the Start of the Debates
The first session of debates in the FG Assembly happened on August 31st, 2022, bringing many exciting discussions between delegations. In the BREXIT committee, the theme stayed unchanged throughout the day, that being what could be the consequences of the UK's exit from the EU. All of the delegations present participated in today's debate.
Debates started with the UK giving reasons for their exit, one of them being that the relationship with the EU is no longer beneficial and proposing an agreement which would present itself as beneficial to both UK and EU. Russia attacked the UK and said that the BREXIT was a selfish act, to which the USA responded by saying that their attacks were also selfish, and Russia then attacked the USA saying that operations in Syria were also selfish. After the UK suggested agreements with Russia, they were also attacked, this time by Luxembourg, which said that the UK was open to agreements with countries that support war. Topics like worker shortages caused by BREXIT were also addressed. Germany later said that the UK would no longer be beneficial to the EU, potentially turning into a liability. A unification of Northern and Southern Ireland was suggested, and there was a voting session and the decision was unanimous, all of the delegations were in favour of this unification. The last speech of the day was from Italy, which said that they had made an agreement with the UK and suggested that other countries do the same before BREXIT, that is, if it happens.
Debates will continue in the following days, however, the number of countries that are in favour of BREXIT is now 12, in comparison to 3 as the OPDs suggested, the number of countries that are against BREXIT is now 1, that country being France. 3 countries abstained from the vote.
Day 3: September 1st
BREXIT Leaves Europe In Major Economic Crisis
September 1st was the day that voting for BREXIT happened, the decision was unanimous, and all countries were in favor. The aftermath of the British exit was a shock, there was a stock market crash and more than 1.1 billion dollars were lost, and countries will now have to work together to resolve this issue as quickly as possible.
After much debate, France was convinced by the UK's agreement since they'd give France access to 15% of British oceans, and other countries were convinced after the USA proposed discounts for all the countries that supported BREXIT.
Unfortunately, with BREXIT also came a serious economic crisis, which left Europe with many issues. Many countries proposed agreements, the USA said they can give economical support to those in need, while Ireland said that something similar to 1933's New Deal could be helpful since the New Deal helped to resolve 1929's stock market crash.
In the end, it was settled that all 16 countries present would pay 38 million dollars to the UK, the USA will pay four times that (158 million), China will pay three times that (114 million), and Russia would pay 1.5 times that (57 million), in total the money would be equivalent to 823 million dollars, an amount the UK said will be enough to resolve this crisis.
