This workshop describes a range of scalable approaches that can be integrated into large enrollment courses to engage students including creating interactive lectures, utilizing in-class active learning strategies, engaging students via dynamic out-of-class assignments and the role of classroom assessment techniques for fostering active learning.

Ever feel like you've wasted a lot of energy “perfecting” solutions to curricular problems, only to have the solution fail or even make the problem worse? Do you feel like the time you've invested creating new lessons and assignments actually produces value for your students, or do you sometimes feel like you’ve spent hours refining approaches only to see them fail? Lean thinking is an iterative approach to teaching innovation that seeks to minimize waste by testing prototypes of your ideas early and often. This conversation, which draws from The Lean Startup by entrepreneur Eric Reis, will help you validate or falsify curricular ideas with minimum effort.

This interactive, hands-on workshop will provide an opportunity to develop strategies for navigating difficult topics in these turbulent times. Many instructors design courses for students to participate actively in discussions and conversations about contemporary topics. However the more challenging the topic, the riskier it may be for a student to participate. In this workshop, we will explore what true dialogue is, how to facilitate a dialogic space, and what to do when things go awry.
