South O'Brien Bands

 

Overview

The South O'Brien band is a comprehensive program that provides opportunities in concert band, marching band, jazz band, and pep band. Students also participate annually in the Iowa High School Music Association all-state auditions and solo/ensemble festival as well as various honor band opportunities.

The high school ensemble rehearses daily for 43 minutes (8:20-9:03). 

The junior high band rehearses on alternating days, also for 43 minutes (2:47-3:30).

During marching band season, the South O'Brien Marching Band rehearses from 7:00-8:00am on Tuesday and Thursday.

The South O'Brien High School Jazz I starts rehearsals after marching band season has concluded and rehearses from 7-8am on Monday, Wednesday and every other Friday.

Jazz II starts rehearsals after marching band season has concluded and rehearses from 7-8am on Tuesday and Thursday.

The Pep Band plays at all home Girls/Boys Varsity double-header Basketball games during the season. 

All students receive a 20 minute lesson once per 6-day cycle.


 

 

 

 

About the Director of 7-12 Bands

Mrs. Becky Meyer has been teaching at South O'Brien since 2004. Previous to taking the 7-12 Director of Bands position in 2021, she served the district as the TK-6th music teacher/5-6th grade band director and 5-8th grade band director. In 2024, Mrs. Meyer became the Director of 7-12 Choirs in addition to Director of 7-12 Bands.

Mrs. Meyer and her husband, Mike, are both graduates of South O'Brien HS. They reside on a farm south of Germantown. Their son, Colton, is a 2019 graduate of South O'Brien and daughter, Makenzie, is a 2022 graduate of MMCRU.

Mrs. Meyer received her BA with K-12 Music Education emphasis from Northwestern College in Orange City in 1996. In 2021, she completed her MA in Teaching with Music Education emphasis from Morningside University.

In her off-school time, Mrs. Meyer enjoys attending sporting events of all kinds, reading a good book, helping with the Caledonia Ramblers 4H club, and playing piano for church and community productions.
