Plastics have a significant environmental challenge. To achieve the solutions the industry requires, it need to innovate on an unprecedented scale. Three sectors are especially critical: Packaging, plastic waste from electrical and electronic equipments, and textile fibers. In all three, I have participated and/or led upstream and downstream innovation projects.
25 years studying and learning from the thermoplastic extrusion process. From the most traditional technologies such as conventional single screw extruders and grooved feed extruders, to more recent or less conventional technology extruders such as twin screw extruders, grooved plasticating extruders, high-speed single screw extruders and oscillating single screw extruders.
In the chemistry, physics and rheology of polymers there is a large part of the understanding of quality and production problems, as well as the possibility of achieving better standards of productivity and efficiency of industrial processes. Changes in the properties of polymers limit or enhance the use of waste, the search for applications and the development of new products.
More than 30 intervened companies have allowed me to discover that when the energy efficiency of a process is improved, its productive efficiency is improved. That is why it is important to know how, where and why energy is consumed in the plant or in the process.
