Alcatraz was a the most secure prison in the US, and they called it the "Rock" because the prison was a island in the middle of the bay of san francisco. because of the cold waters, and the maximum security, almost no one has ever escape, other then three people.
the three people that escaped are frank morris, clarence anglin, and john anglin. there whereabouts are unknown to this day, and many people wonder is they never escaped, but drowned in the san francisco bay.
on the night on june 11 1962 the trio made there escape. how they got out of there cells, there was grate by the sink, and what they did, was they drilled tiny holes around the perimeter of the grate, and then broke the grate with was wide enough to slip though. once they went through, they crawled through a bunch of tubes, and pipes, which got them out to the roof of the prison. When they made the escape, the used paper mache heads in there beds to make it look like they were still asleep. after the got on the roof they ran and got off the roof, and ran alongside the water tower and made there escape. the boat they use was a makeshift raft from 50 raincoats, with paddles. no one has seen them since, did they succeed in freedom? or drowned at the bottom of the bay?
alcatraz close shortly after, and the investigation on the trio's escape closed in 1979, when they concluded that they couldn't have survived. and that should be all you're thinking, right? well, in january 2018, there was a letter that was sent to the fbi that said"my name is John Anglin, i escaped from alcatraz in 1962 with my brother Clarence Anglin, and Frank Morris. i am 83 years old, and i have cancer. yes we made it that night but barley." there was some other strange things that happened after their escape. every year roses would be sent to david wideners grandmother(david is the nephew of john and clarice).
also when they escaped, that night, the police of san francisco stated that they saw a "pristine white boat" on the night, there was no lights on, but it looked like someone was on the boat with a flashlight....... that boat was not found after the night of the escape, and they never found the owner..............
