감염병은 그 어떤 단일 원인 질병과 비교할 수 없을 만큼 전 세계적으로 수많은 사상자를 발생시켰으며, 이는 여전히 진행 중입니다. 면역학과 백신에 대한 연구는 생명을 구하고 삶을 향상시킬 수 있는 최고의 옵션입니다. 최진용 교수가 면역학과 백신을 연구하는 이유입니다.
분자면역조절 연구실에서는 감염시, 백신 접종시, 또는 각종 질병 상황시에 일어나는 면역반응, 특히 적응면역 (adaptive immunity)에 관여하는 세포의 작동 방식을 이해하고 이를 조절할 수 있는 방법에 대해 연구합니다. 감염원에 대한 항체를 생산하기 위해서는 여러 가지 세포가 관여를 하는데, 이 중 특히 CD4 “도움” 세포 (CD4 helper T cells)의 역할이 필수적입니다. 우리 연구실은 CD4 helper T cell의 분화와 기능에 관여하는 여러 가지 인자의 발현 조절 기전을 분자-세포-개체 수준에서 밝힘으로써 감염에 대항하는 면역 반응을 보다 잘 이해하고, 이를 통해 백신의 효능을 향상시킬 수 있는 기술을 연구하고 있습니다. 또한, CD4 helper T cell이 관여하는 여러 가지 질환 (예를 들면, 알러지, 자가면역 질환, 암 등)에 대한 연구를 함께 수행하고 있습니다.
우리 연구실의 대학원생 및 연구원은 다양한 분자생물학적 실험 기법, 세포 실험, 마우스를 이용한 동물 실험을 기본으로 유전자 조작 (유전자 편집 및 과발현) 기술, 다앙한 high-throughput sequencing 기술, bioinformatics 지식 등을 익히게 됩니다. 기술 습득과 함께 과학적 사고를 할 수 있는 훈련을 통해 독립적인 연구를 할 수 있는 의생명과학자를 양성하는 것이 우리 연구실의 목표입니다. 또한, 우리 연구실은 미국 샌디에고 소재 La Jolla Institute for Immunology (LJI) 및 플로리다 소재 University of Florida - Scripps Institute와 공동연구 진행 중으로 학위 과정 동안 해외 연구 기관 방문 연구를 할 수 있는 기회가 주어집니다(2023 2명, 2024년 2명 연수 완료, 2025년 연수 예정).
