Social Language

What is social language?

These are the rules that we follow when we talk. There are rules about when and how you should talk to people. We use facial expressions or gestures to share how we feel. We learn how to let someone know when we change the topic. Knowing and using these rules makes it easier to communicate. (Source).

Home practice activities:

  • If you have a board game, craft, or puzzle at home now is a great time to pull it out! You can practice eye contact, turn-taking, conversation skills, and following directions! Model whole-body listening. Your kiddo should be facing the speaker, his or her eyes should be on the speaker, and he or she should be nodding or commenting to show they are interested in what the speaker has to say.

  • Visit Everydayspeech. This website has videos and worksheets that model social expectations.
