Somerset Fishing Team's Favorite repeat Sponsors!

Thank you for your support over our six years!

Eskimo Gear has given us generous deals on high quality gear since our inception not only for our club members, but prizes for our tournaments as well. Eskimo and ION truly care about the next generation of anglers and kids!

Appleton Lathing has been our most generous donor for our Bass Lake Tournament since 2021. Our club and community tournament would look very different without their support! Not to mention the experience for our club members each Saturday outting and our State grand adventure. Without ALC we would not be comforting our kids in the hotels that we have been able to secure! They are all over the state of Wisconsin with their industrial construction as well as working on Lambeau Field! We cannot say enough about Appleton Lathing!

One Last Cast Inc. has been a sponsor as well as given our squad a modern wardrobe at an affordable cost for our club members. They have been extremely helpful in making sure our members look as good as they fish while also coming in person to the Bass Lake Tournament.

Marvs Trailers in Somerset is the local, hometown connection our organization looked for when making the biggest purchase we'll ever make - our enclosed trailer!! They gave us a deal because they love supporting the school district and community. All other trailer depots are insignificant compared to our buddies at Marvs!

Star Prairie Fish & Game has been a sponsor since our first year and without them, we may not be here! The first year was full of expenses that would not be possible without them. Please visit their website and see the fantastic work they do for our environment!

Fleet Farm has sponsored of our tournament for two years with substantial donations and a pellet grill to give away! They have also been at our tournament in person making us look very official.

Warner's Dock Inc. has been a sponsor of our Bass Lake tournament since its creation and we cannot thank them enough. They are our go-to boat dealer and without them, our tournament would look very different.

American Legion Post 111 in Somerset has supported our club as well as hosted events for our members such as grad parties and memorials. They are ingrained in our Somerest community and we thank them!

FNC Bank in Somerset is our favorite bank! They have donated to our club and tournament for the past three years. We appriciate your support!

CLAM is a new sponsor but has already given our members deals on their high quality gear. They also have donated prizes for our tournaments!

Northview Service Center in Somerset has been a sponsor three Bass Lake Tournaments! We greatly appreciate your donations year after year.

The best cheesy food in all the land! Bass Lake Cheese Factory in Somerset is the hot spot of Somerset educators every in-service day and the community. We LOVE Bass Lake!

CJ RV & Marine in Hudson showed up in person with their fish houses in 2022 for our Bass Lake Tournament and gave away lots of merch! Our members loved hanging out in their state of the art houses!

Before there were public restrooms at Bass Lake boat launch there was Apostle Services! They provided portable restrooms for our first two years of Bass Lake Tournaments as well as donated tournament funds.

Jonathan Timm - Edward Jones in Somerset supported us for three tournaments and are our favorite financial advisors!

What is the team?

Students that plan to join the Somerset Fishing Team will not only be having a great time learning and practicing to fish while competing against other schools, they will also learn about our natural resources and develop a greater appreciation for them. Students will also be able to join no matter their prior experiences in the outdoors or winter sports status. Winter sport athletes will also have no problem joining the fishing team because competing is strictly a weekend activity. Competitions, practices, and equipment checks will all be done on Saturdays. The season of competition for the ice fishing season spans from the beginning of January until the end of February, which is the state tournament. There will also be great opportunities for community service projects and community involvement.

"I want people to know that being a part of the club will enhance the knowledge of those that join and make them much more mindful of the effects of both human and natural phenomena," Anderson said. "These young men and women are the key to creating a sustainable future and need to understand how the environment works around them with the hope they will spread their knowledge to others confidently. This knowledge will also help them become lifelong learners as well as be successful in our competitions this year." - Keaton Anderson : credit New Richmond News

It might have taken a little longer than planned to pull together, but this winter, Somerset High School students will have the opportunity to get out onto lakes across the state to ice fish against students from all over Wisconsin.

"The students who came to me about starting the club just love fishing and the outdoors. A lot of the kids also wanted something to do during the winter time since many of them don't play a sport during the winter season," said biology, Earth and space science teacher Keaton Anderson. "The events and what not will be mainly on the weekends, so it will allow club members to continue doing what they do during the week and just have to come to the weekend competitions."

The club, which was approved by the Somerset Board of Education at its Aug. 6 work session, won't just give students the chance to get outside during the winter, Anderson said; it will also teach them about the environment.

This knowledge will also help them become lifelong learners as well as be successful in our competitions this year."

In order to go to competitions, Anderson said, students will be doing flipped classroom activities that teach them about important ideas and issues real biologists face every day. Subjects for their activities might include: hook mortality, invasive species identification, lake turnover effects and the reasoning behind daily limit counts.

"During our first year, we are going to stick with ice fishing this year since that requires less logistics wise than open water fishing, which also just isn't as popular with the kids at this point either," Anderson said. "Ice fishing makes more sense by the numbers, but we will get into open water fishing eventually."

Anderson currently has 25 signatures from students interested in joining the club, but he anticipates more than 35 students. Teams are made up of four students and Anderson hopes to have at least a couple teams signed up for every competition the club plans to attend. The ice fishing season lasts two months, but it doesn't start until after the holiday season in January. Events will take place on Saturdays and will be hosted by organizations across the state.

The students who sign up for the club will be fundraising heavily throughout the next several months in order to fund the club, Anderson said, with the biggest cost being travel.

"A lot of kids will come and bring their own things, which is encouraged, but for some kids that don't have anything, I'd like to give them something. I don't want kids to pay to go to tournaments or paying for their teams. That should be something we can provide for them," Anderson said. "We will also try to get our hands on some portable shacks and some ice augers, too."

Anyone interested in joining the club should reach out to Anderson, either at school or by email at kjanderson@somerset.k12.wi.us. Those interested in donating to the club or volunteering can also contact Anderson.

"It will be a learning experience for sure. But it will be very fun. It gives a pretty cool opportunity for kids to get involved with something more unique and outdoorsy in the winter time. I don't think we have any other club where people can go outside and investigate, so this club will be the closest thing to that," Anderson said.
