Sex-based Harassment
In compliance with regulations implementing Title IX of the Educational Amendments Act of 1973, and applicable state laws, the Somers Board of Education prohibits discrimination or harassment on the basis of race, color, religious creed, age, marital status, military or veteran status, national origin, sex, ancestry, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or past or present physical or mental disability.
Sex-based harassment is illegal. It is prohibited by The Connecticut Discrimination Employment Practices Act, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and Somers Board of Education Policy. Sex- based harassment means: “any unwelcome sexual advances or requests for sexual favors or any conduct of a sexual nature when:
Submission to such conduct is made either explicitly or implicitly a term or condition of an individual’s employment;
Submission to or rejection of such conduct by an individual is used as the basis for employment decisions affecting such individual; or
Such conduct has the purpose or effect of substantially interfering with an individual’s work performance or creating an intimidating, hostile, or offensive working environment.”
Individuals who engage in acts of sex-based harassment may be subject to civil and criminal penalties.
