In grades 3, 4 and 5, students are always encouraged to practice ten finger touch typing at home. Practicing for 15-20 minutes per day is a great way to hone skills for both speed and accuracy!
Students can visit the keyboarding link at the top of this page to access 9 free keyboarding games, or simply click the link below. (We use www.typingclub.com most often at SES, as each lesson builds on the one before. You do not need to create a profile to use this site, even when prompted.)
By the end of third grade, students are expected to be typing 10 words per minute with 85% accuracy, by the end of fourth grade, students are expected to be typing 15 words per minute with 85% accuracy, and by the end of 5th grade, students are expected to be typing 20 words per minute with 85% accuracy.
Beginning in 3rd grade, students are introduced to coding. Coding is a skill where you take instructions (the steps in a task) and translate it into a language the computer understands since computers do not communicate like humans. Coding requires logic, attention to detail, abstract thinking, patience, perseverance and a strong memory. Through the following website, students are exposed to the beginning stages of coding....and it's a lot of fun!
Students can choose any of the coding games on this site, both those that we tried in class and others!
Somers Elementary School has a free trial subscription to TumbleBooks, allowing students to read quality literature, both fiction and nonfiction, online. If you can't put your hands on a paper copy of something your child enjoys reading, or if the motivation to read on a device works in your home, check out this link. There are books for all ages...enjoy!
Due to the current situation in our world, many authors, illustrators, artists and actors are using the web and social media to bring art and reading into your home! The site We Are Teachers has compiled a list of just some links to these resources, but there are many more out there, and new ones posted each day!
Through this amazing resource, students will have access to approximately three hours of learning opportunities per day, including projects based on exciting articles and stories, virtual field trips, reading and geography challenges, and more. These learning journeys are being carefully curated by Scholastic editors to ensure meaningful learning takes place right from the comfort of your home!
The site includes daily lessons across four different grade spans—Pre K/K, Grades 1–2, Grades 3–5, and Grades 6–9+. Learning experiences will cover ELA, STEM, Science, Social Studies, and Social-Emotional Learning.
Do your kids have questions? Mystery Doug can answer them! Mystery Doug is a weekly video series for elementary teachers and students based entirely on questions that real students ask. It's the perfect five-minute break for your brain, and you can learn some really cool stuff!
