for games and practicesYour role as a coach/parent
Emphasize skill development
We want to build good habits
Strong foundation developed in practice = good experience in competition
Provide an enjoyable experience
You are fostering a lifelong love for softball and physical activity
Introduce basic rules
Develop all-around athletes
Specializing in 1 sport at a young age leads to early burnout
Keep a positive learning environment - its ok to fail
Teach youth how to be team players
Showing up to games + practices ready
Learning to lead and/or follow
Tips for this stage
Kids don't need the adult version of softball, adapt gameplay!
Keep activities short and high-energy
Keep explanations short and simple
Work in sequence, start with simple skills, work up to the more difficult ones
Get caregivers/siblings involved
Athletes will feel more comfortable
Setting a good example to the kids, caregivers are role models and kids greatest influence!
Get creative
Utilize alternative materials to keep kids engaged (balloons, stuffed animals, sponges)
Introduce simple challenges
Can you jump over this rope?
Can you hit the ball X far?
NOTE: Remind athletes to NEVER swing a bat before looking around to make sure its safe. NEVER walk behind someone swinging a bat.
What to look for:
Proper grip, lining up "door knocking" knuckles
Plate stance
Feet shoulder-width apart with knees slightly bent
Bat should reach opposite side of the plate
Hands towards back shoulder
Hands lined up with back ear
Bat is straight in the air
Weight on back leg, front heel off the ground
What to look for:
Turn hips/bellybutton towards the pitcher
Shift weight to front foot
Back toes "squish" a bug
Heel to the sky
Shoelaces to the pitcher
Make contact the ball in front of the plate (off the front foot)
After contact, arms extend towards the pitcher
Follow through over the shoulder to the center of the back
Drop the bat (don't throw it!)
RUN!
Proper Grip
"Door knocking" knuckles are lined up
Index fingers should point in the same direction when extended.
Batters are not clutching the bat in the palm of their hand
Plate Stance
Bat should reach opposite side of the plate.
Toes pointed toward plate at shoulder-width apart.
Elbows
Elbows are kept up at shoulder height.
Footwork
Weight starts on back foot
On swing, front foot steps forward, back toes "squish" a bug.
Front leg is strong on the weight transfer
Objective
Fun spin on typical batting practice.
Setup
None
Equipment
Catchers Equipment
Bat
Ball
Gloves
Set up defense and allow 1 player to bat. Coach pitches to batter. Defensive team must field 3 balls to get the batter "out" switching with the next better.
Objective
Allows coaches to analyze batters while keeping the rest of the team engaged
Setup
2nd base
Equipment
Bat
Gloves
Ball
Split team into 2 teams, offence/defense. Coach pitches to a batter, when the batter hits - they run towards 2nd base, trying to get to the base safely. Defense can tag the bag or runner.
Once everyone from the first team has had a chance to bat, switch teams.
Objective
To teach athletes how to react safely to a wild pitch.
Being hit by a pitch can happen, teaching athletes how to avoid getting seriously hurt by a pitch can be fun and help reduce the scariness of being hit.
Setup
Setup playing field with middle line
Equipment
soft dodgeballs
Use foam dodgeballs, divide players onto 2 teams, explain to athletes that this is not typical dodgeball - if they get hit on their "number" (on their back) they are still safe. They can dodge the ball like typical dodgeball as well. If they get hit, they leave the playing field.
Cheer and encourage players if they get hit in the "numbers" or make a good dodge!
Chat with athletes after about how getting hit in the numbers (on their back) is the safest way to get hit by a pitch (dodging the pitch is better). Getting hit in the back is safer than the ribs, head or hands.
What to look for:
High knees
Arms bent at 90 degrees
Arms should "pump" with opposite knee
Arms do not cross the body
Lean forward
What to look for:
Don't look at the ball! Look at the coach.
Proper running form
Remind athletes to "pump" their arms!
Run full speed through the orange base
Foot should hit the front of the orange base
Don't leap/lunge at first base
COACHING TIP: 1B coach stands 5-10 feet past 1st base with high-5 extended to encourage runners to run through the bag!
What to look for:
Proper running form
Loop just outside the baseline in a question-mark (?) shape about 2-3 strides before the base
Draw lines in the sand for athletes to follow
Step on the inside corner of the base with the right foot
PRACTICE TIP: Put a glove/stuffed animal on the outside corner of the bag - athletes will not want to step on it when practicing and will remember to hit the inside corner of the bag.
Objective
Familiarize players with base orientation and how to run the bases.
Setup
Setup bases
Equipment
Bases
Athletes follow the coach as they run around the diamond, shouting out each base they pass (1st! 2nd! 3rd! Home!)
Introduce scenarios (ie, a single hit = run through orange. a double = round first, inside corner of the bag and head to 2nd, stopping on the bag)
Objective
Learn to run the bases. Cheer and support your teammates
Setup
Divide players into 2 teams.
Start team 1 at home, team 2 at second.
Give 1 ball to each team.
Equipment
Bases
2 balls
On go, 1 person from each team runs the bases with a ball in hand. Once completed they pass the ball to the next person on their team. Encourage cheering!
What to look for:
Feet shoulder width apart
Knees bent
Glove out in front
Pinky fingers together
Arms slightly bent
What to look for:
Stand sideways with glove, shoulder and front hip pointing towards target
Throwing arm and glove are chest height, palms down, forming a "U" shape
Throwing arm raises to 90 degrees ("L" shape)
Shift weight forward, glove dropping to front leg
Throwing arm pointing at the target upon release
Objective
Accurate throws to positions & communication
Setup
6 fielders in position (1st, 2nd, SS, 3rd, P, C)
Equipment
1 ball
Gloves
Catcher throws to 3rd, 3rd to 2nd, 2nd to Shortstop, Shortstop to 1st, 1st to Pitcher, Pitcher to Catcher. Get players to call out each others name before throwing the ball.
MODIFICATION 1: Too hard? Get all players to take steps in towards home.
MODIFICATION 2: Make it a race! Have a player run the bases and see whos faster (throwers vs runners)!
Objective
Practicing proper throwing and accuracy
Setup
Mount a target to the fence (picture, hoola hoop, frisbee, hat etc)
Equipment
Target
Balls
Stand players away from target at an appropriate distance, coach rolls a grounder to the player. Player fields the ball then throws properly and tries to hit the target. Cheer on teammates!
MODIFICATION 1: Balance bats on home plate and challenge players to throw a ball at it to knock it over.
What to look for:
Stand in athletic position
Glove and throwing hand out in front of body
Receive throw with 2 soft hands
Transfer to throwing position
Teaching Progression:
Start with no ball, practice moving glove around like clock hands
Get athletes to self-toss a ball into the air to work on hand-eye coordination
Coach soft-tosses easy catches to player, advancing to left side/right side to practice moving to catch the ball
Play catch with teammates
NOTE: If catching skills are not developed this will just become a game of chase, no fun for anyone.
1.
Clock Hands
Ball below the belt? Pinkies together
Ball above the belt? Thumbs together
2.
Self-Toss
Proper glove position
Using 2 hands to catch the ball
3.
Coach Tosses
Proper glove position
Using 2 hands to catch the ball
Proper transfer into throwing position
4.
Play Catch
Ensure players have developed throwing and catching skills.
Objective
Use of soft hands and learning to catch with both hands.
Setup
Get athletes to pair up and stand facing each other.
Ask athletes to take 2 big steps back so they are about 4 ft away from each other.
Equipment
1 ball per team
Gloves
Cheer them on! Players throw the ball to one another, if they are successful in catching, take a step back.
MODIFICATION 1: Try it without a glove, this challenges players to use both hands to catch the ball. Use a softer ball.
MODIFICATION 2: Use water balloons, beanbags, soccer balls, baseballs instead! Using unconventional things keeps it fun!
Objective
Practice consistency of catching the ball
Setup
On the grass, divide team into 2 groups
Each team stands in a circle, arms length away from each other
Equipment
1 ball for each team
On GO, teams throw to their teammates, trying to make 15 consecutive catches. Encourage them to count out loud and cheer each other on!
MODIFICATION: Too easy? Take a big step backwards!
What to look for:
Ready position, glove foot slightly forward
Glove reaches to meet the ball
Line up bellybutton to ball / straddle the path of the ball
Scoop the ball with "alligator hands"
Squeeze the ball
Secure the ball with throwing hand
Transfer to throwing position
Objective
Fielding a live ground ball, communicating with teammates
Setup
Setup cones in a square, about 10-20ft apart
Equipment
4 cones
Ball
2 teams of 3 spread out on opposite sides of the square between the cones. Players throw grounders for teammates to field, calling "mine" before getting the ball.
MODIFICATION 1: Throws not strong enough or accurate? Coach throws/hits the ball.
MODIFICATION 2: Set goal posts at 10ft and 1 athlete goes at a time and has to keep the ball out of the goal.
What to look for:
Ready position
Extend arms into the air, thumbs together
Line up under the ball
Watch ball enter glove
Secure ball in glove with throwing hand
Transfer to throwing position
Objective
Learning to get under a fly ball
Setup
1 coach per 3-4 players
Equipment
Very soft balls (stress balls or softer)
Coach tosses a fly ball to each player, the player headbutts the ball. Throw left/right to practice getting under the ball. This will get silly!
MODIFICATION 1: Work on communication - players line up, calling for each ball.
MODIFICATION 2: Use helmets + whiffle balls instead.
Objective
Catching flyballs
Setup
Players with fielding masks
Players with gloves
Equipment
Ball appropriate to skill level
Group of players in the field, Coach shouts a value and tosses a fly ball to the group, player must call for the ball and catch it to "win" the value of points. Teammates must back-off if ball is called for. This can get silly, call for billions, gazillions of points!
MODIFICATION: Use whiffle balls with no gloves instead, this encourages using both hands.
Objective
Agility, cooperation and running
Setup
Set up large square playing field
Equipment
Cones (or way to set borders)
Choose 1 player to be the blob, if the blob tags a player, they must run together holding hands trying to tag other players. The blob grows as players keep getting tagged. After 4 players in the blob, the blob can split into 2 groups.
Objective
Agility, cooperation and running
Setup
Set up large square playing field
1 ball per player per corner/base
Equipment
Cones (or way to set corners)
1 ball per player, evenly split at each corner/base
Split team into 4 groups, assign each team a corner (1 team per base works well). On GO teams have to get rid of the balls from their corner and run them to another teams corner, players should not throw the balls.
Coach decides time limit for this game (2min is good)
MODIFICATION: Silly walks only! Jumping only! Skipping only! Red Light, Green Light version!
Objective
Modified gameplay
Setup
Bases
Equipment
Bats, helmets
Gloves
Balls
Optional: Hitting tee
Divide players into 3 teams, each team has 7min as offence with the other 2 teams playing defense. Number of outs does not matter, rather each team is given set amount of time to bat/run bases.
Objective
Modified gameplay
Setup
Bases
Cones along infield/outfield border
Equipment
Gloves
Balls
Divide players into 2 teams. 1 team takes defensive positions on the infield, 1 team at home with a ball (offence). Offence takes turns throwing the ball with the goal of trying to get their ball past the defense, running the bases after the ball is thrown. 1 point for the ball getting past the defense, 2 points if the ball goes over the cones. Once the entire offence has thrown/run - switch.
