How to cover paperbacks
You will need:
Fiber filament tape (optional but great)
Squeegee or bone folder to smooth
Scissors, plus small embroidery scissors are helpful at the end
Is this a book you would weed anyway? Is it outdated? Old nonfiction isn't worth repairing, or fiction with dated covers that doesn't circulate much.
If it's still popular (Guinness Book of World Records, Dog Man, a graphic novel) it may be worth the repair time and supplies. Local history/books that can't be replaced may be worth the time.
Is it losing pages or have torn pages? You can "tip" pages back in with glue, or repair torn pages, but sadly, once a book starts shedding pages it's almost certainly headed for the recycle bin. Again, make sure it's worth it.
If you decide it's worth your time and energy and supplies to repair - see Section 3, below!
Note: is it Folletbound, Permabound, Bound to Stay Bound (guaranteed binding? If so, you may be able to get a free replacement copy by contacting the company. Look on the back of the book toward the bottom, usually.
Reinforce a worn or broken hinge inside a book
4. Reattach a torn-off book cover (similar to above)
Double stitched binder tape (pricey!)
Waxed paper (any, but Demco link here)
Cheesecloth
Rubber bands
Something for weight while glue dries
5. Covering and repairing corners (I prefer clear, looks much better)
