📚 Summer Reading Requirements – Let Books Brighten Your Mind
The ELA Department of South Orangetown Central School District encourages all students to keep their minds active by reading during summer break. Research shows that students who read regularly over the summer continue to grow academically throughout the year.
🎨 Students entering grades 6, 7, and 8 should read at least two books, fiction or nonfiction. (Books of approximately 500+ pages may count as two.) Of course, we hope you’ll explore beyond the minimum—read widely and let your curiosity paint your summer with new ideas!
🌟 Show What You Know
In the first few weeks of school, students will have the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of the books they read. Need help finding the perfect stories? Browse the suggested book lists and resources linked below.
✨ With so many new books being published every day, students are welcome to read titles not included on the lists. Teachers may also have shared recommendations in class or on their blog pages.
📖 Important Note: If your child selects a book that is part of our regular ELA curriculum, they will need to reread it during the school year.
📚🌈 Visit Your Local Library
Though the SOMS library is closed during the summer, your neighborhood public libraries are open and ready to help you discover stories that will color your world with wonder.
