English Honor Society

Overview

The Tappan Zee High School English Honor Society was founded in 2003 to confer distinction for high achievement in English language and literature at Tappan Zee High School. The society seeks to promote interest in literature and the English language, provide cultural stimulation in the form of lectures, debates, and performances, and serve society by fostering literacy.

Members of the English Honor Society are juniors and seniors who have exhibited high standards of excellence in their freshmen and sophomore English classes, published a piece of writing on the school, state, or national level, and received the recommendation of at least one English teacher.

English Honor Society Service

Students must complete a total of four points of service to the field of English Language Arts to be considered eligible for EHS.  Following acceptance, students must complete an additional 20 points of service per year (10 per semester) to remain in active standing. Failure to complete service requirements will result in dismissal from the EHS.

English Honor Society Membership Requirements

I.  Grade Level Requirements

Students may apply in spring of their sophomore or junior years only.

II.  Academic Requirements

Students seeking membership in the EHS must maintain a cumulative average of:

             92 in Regents English

             86 in Honors English

III.  Publishing Requirements

Students seeking membership in the EHS must have completed a minimum of one of the following during their high school career:

• Published an article in Tapress

• Published an essay, story, or poem in Tones

• Published any written piece in an accredited publication outside of TZHS (See appendix for list of acceptable publications) Please note: self-publishing on the web does not meet the requirements)

• Won recognition in an accredited writing contest (See appendix on application for lists of acceptable contests)

IV.  Service Points

Students must complete a total of four points of service to the field of English Language Arts to be considered eligible for EHS.  Service hours may be completed in any combination of the following:

• Tutoring for English, writing skills, SAT verbal in the Learning Center [Signature of Learning Center Staff member required]

• Aiding English teachers in any tasks or projects as they see fit [Signature of cooperating English Teacher required]

• Supporting TZHS Library Staff in any tasks or projects as they see fit [Signature of Library Staff member required]

• Participation in set-up, clean-up, or other stage management for Hepcat or any other EHS sponsored event [Signature of Ms. McMane or EHS officer required]

V.   Conduct Requirement

Students applying for admission to the EHS must exemplify honorable conduct both inside and outside of the classroom as determined by the faculty members of the English Department.  Failure to demonstrate honorable behavior may prohibit admission to the EHS or cause a member’s dismissal.
