1. Why we value your privacy

Socratic Software recognizes that people who use our mobile app, Introduction to Stochastic Signal Processing (StochasticS) or our internet-based website (StochasticA), value their privacy. We are committed to keeping your personal and business information safe. When necessary, we ask for only the minimum information from our customers. We will never use your personal information for any reason other than why you gave it to us. We will never give anyone access to it unless we are required to do so by law.

2. How we collect information

At this time, we do not actively collect any information about you. Any information that we may collect will be a result of you contacting us through one of our email addresses. We may, in the future, ask through our app for contact information including your name, email address, and phone number so that we can appropriately reply to your enquiry.

Our website does not use cookies or scripts that track the websites you visit. Neither do we use native social media “like” or “sharing” buttons. We do not build profiles of your internet activity. In our internet-based website version (StochasticA), we do use an industry-standard and accepted analytical tool to observe which chapters and which laboratory exercises are being used and in what countries the users are located. We emphasize that the information provided to us does not involve your personal information.

We may ask for your account and contact information should you buy something from us.

Should we receive your contact information from one of our partners, we will protect it in exactly the same way as if you had directly given it to us.

3. What information we hold

When you contact us by email, we collect your email address, the name you have provided, and any other information that you have voluntarily provided.

Should you buy something from us at some time in the future, we intend to collect your name, email address, phone number, and a delivery address.

If you do business with us, we will also collect your business name and bank details and keep records of the invoices we send you and the payments you make.

At the present time our app StochasticS is free. If, at a later date, purchases are involved, they will be processed by our e-commerce platform and we will never have access to your credit card information.

4. Cookies and other technologies

A “cookie” is a small text file that may be used, for example, to collect and transfer information within an app. Our app StochasticS and the website StochasticA use “session cookies” to allow communication between various pages within the app. These cookies are deleted when the session ends. During a session the contents of the cookies are not communicated outside the app.

Our app StochasticS also uses the microphone and the camera on your mobile device. Neither the microphone nor the camera will be enabled without your explicit permission. Each and every audio or visual recording will be made only through your interaction with the device. Recordings will be neither transmitted nor available outside the app. After a session has ended recordings will be deleted.

5. Where we store your information

While neither we, nor any other organization, can guarantee the security of information processed online, we do have appropriate security measures in place to protect your personal information. For example, we store the personal information you provide on computer systems with limited access and encryption. We maintain separate software for user contacts (by email) and for future e-commerce transactions. We have chosen these systems partly for their commitment to security.

6. How we use your information

Should you contact us through email, we will use your information to respond to you as necessary. Should, at some time in the future, you purchase a product from us, we will use your information to send you invoices, statements, reminders, and notices of updates of the products you have purchased. With respect to update notices about our products, if you tell us not to notify you, we we will not contact you again.

7. Who is responsible for your information at our company

Our Technical Manager is responsible for the security of your information. You can contact her/him by email at tech@socraticsoftware.org if you have any concerns about the information we store.

8. Who has access to information about you

When we store information in our own systems, only those people who need it have access. Our management team has access to everything you have provided but individual employees have access to only what they need to do their job.

9. The steps we take to keep your information private

When your information is stored in third-party services, we restrict access to only those people who need it. We store passwords in 1Password (an encrypted password manager), use a different, randomly generated password for each service, and never use the same password twice.

The computers we use are all protected by a passcode or fingerprint access. These computers ask for authentication whenever they are started or after five minutes of inactivity. Our mobile devices are also protected by a passcode, fingerprint, or facial recognition.

10. Under California law

Our app StochasticS and the website StochasticA are free. At some time in the future you might purchase a product from us. For the purposes of the California Law (CalOPPA), we refer to both types of users—those who use the free products and those who purchase a product from us—as “consumers”.

• California Privacy Rights

California Civil Code Section 1798.83 permits our consumers who are California residents to request certain information regarding our disclosure of Personal Information to third parties for their direct marketing purposes. To make such a request, please send an email to contact@socraticsoftware.org. Please note that we are only required to respond to one request per consumer each year.

• Our California “Do Not Track” Notice

We do not track consumers over time and across third party websites and do not, therefore, respond to “Do Not Track” signals. We do not allow third parties to collect personally identifiable information about an individual consumer’s online activities over time and across different websites when a consumer uses the app.

• Deletion of Content from California Residents

If you are a California resident under the age of 18 and a registered user, California Business and Professions Code Section 22581 permits you to remove content or Personal Information that you have publicly posted. If you wish to remove such content or Personal Information and you specify which content or Personal Information you wish to be removed, we will do so in accordance with applicable law. Please be aware that after removal you will not be able to restore the removed content. In addition, such removal does not ensure complete or comprehensive removal of the content or Personal Information you have posted and that there may be circumstances in which the law does not require us to enable removal of content.

11. How to complain

We take complaints seriously. If you have any reason to complain about the ways we handle your privacy, please contact us by email at contact@socraticsoftware.org.

12. Changes to the policy

If we change the contents of this policy, those changes will become effective the moment we publish them on our website.
