Rules for Adding Integers

1. If the Signs are the same ---- ADD the numbers and give the answer the same sign

2. If the Signs are opposite ---- SUBTRACT the numbers and give the sign of the larger number

Rules for Subtracting Integers

Keep - Change - Change

1. Keep the first number the same

2. Change the subtraction sign to addition

3. Change the sign of the last number

Rules for Multiplying and Dividing Rational Numbers

- If the signs are the same then the answer will be Positive

(3)(4)=12 (-3)(-4)=12

- If the signs are opposite then the answer will be Negative

(-3)(4)=-12 (3)(-4)=-12

- If there is more than 2 numbers, count the negatives

- If there's an odd number of negatives the answer will be Negative ?(3)(-4)(-2)(-5)= -120

-If there's an even number of negatives the answer will be Positive

(3)(-4)(2)(-5)= 120

Rules for Multiplying and Diving Positive and Negative Fractions

1. Change mixed numbers into improper fractions

- If division Keep Change Flip

2. Multiply the numerators

3. Multiply the denominators

4. Simplify

5. Count # of negatives, follow odd/even rule
