My role in this coursework is the director, despite that I decided to contribute to my team by creating the social media, tour dates, CD, CD holder, merchandise, and most of the overall digipak. I used the apps: Procreate, Lightroom, Picsart, Canva, Ibispaint X, and more to create the digipak.
Template
The first draft of the album cover was created by Kimberly:
I was inspired by this and decided to edit a few of my own versions in varying hues and styles so my team and I could vote on our favorite one
I decided to use 'color balancing' to shift the mid-tones to a greenish hue and I shifted the shadows to a maroon. I did this with RGB curves and I also shifted the hues to a green-blue mid-tone color and I tried out the his specific hue of green as it is complimentary to red. However I felt that this cover did not fit the 'red' vibe of the album.
Because of the reasons stated before, I decided to use RGB curves to change the colour to more of a reddish hue. I felt that it looked better, however it felt too 'elegant' which does not fit into the 'chaotic' theme of our album.
Hence, I decided to overlay a "glass shatter" layer. I thought it still felt unnatural, so I decided to edit each individual glass 'piece' and shift it slightly in different directions to mimic real glass. This process took me a couple of hours as I had trouble figuring out what looked good.
However, no matter how many times I tweaked the image, I was still left unsatisfied. Which made me consider making the tough decision of redoing the album cover entirely. To aid me in the decision, I decided to garner the opinions of my teammates and classmates, and hearing their opinions further solidified my decision of redoing the album cover.
I decided to do some research on various album covers with a red theme as I wanted the digipak to have an overarching red theme to establish branding. I realized that albums that typically use red in their covers use high contrast lighting, which reflects the themes of all the albums below, which are about heartbreak, depression, and other topics that are relevant in this day and age. These are also the themes I would like to show in my album cover, hence I wanted to follow this trend.
Joji
Fiona Apple
The Weeknd
We thought that the red bathwater would provide contrast to her face. Although that is true, it did not provide any sort of 'high contrast lighting' that we desired for the front cover. I also felt that the image was much too 'light' as it features red and white as its primary colours, instead of red and black.
Although I felt that the lighting in this picture was wonderful, the other elements in the picture did not make this picture stand out to me. A reason is that the artist's body language is stiff, her nose and mouth is also blocked by the rose (which reduces the star image quality), and the knife is not very visible, which makes the image confusing to look at.
I immediately fell in love with this image as I felt as if her expression seemed soulless and it felt like she was candidly looking towards the camera. The addition of the knife also emphasizes the heavy topics shown in the music video. The lighting was also perfect and provided great contrast.
For the editing, I decided to put a "wavy line" overlay to make it fit the 'grunge' aesthetic more. I also increased the contrast, darkened the shadows, and added a bit of perspective blur to increase the audience's focus on the artist. My team and I loved this image so much that we decided to use this image on some of the other aspects of the digipak to further create branding.
I put the title and the artist's name in opposite corners to evenly distribute the visual weight of the image. I also put a 'parental advisory' sticker to warn audiences of explicit words.
In my back cover, I put all of the conventions that I learned in my research.
Similar theme to front cover (bathtub, red)
Having the album title on the top (SOUR!)
Putting the track list (with the timestamps beside each song)
Executive producers underneath the track list
Record Label and distributor logos
Barcode
Anti-Piracy warning
Copyright information (that I wrote myself)
Catalogue Number at the bottom
Adele - 30
Lady Gaga & Tony Bennett - Love For Sale
I learned that in the USA, there are some key elements that a copyright notice must have in order to properly protect the rights of the artist. These include:
The copyright symbol : ©
Sometimes, the phonogram symbol (sound recording copyright symbol ): ℗
The year of first publication of the work
The name of the copyright holder
Manufacturing information (such as where it was located, postal code, etc.)
All rights reserved statement
The finished copyright information & Catalogue number
For the inner front cover, I used a picture of CayV surrounded by red water and roses, to tie in with the album cover (the bathtub) and the branding (red and roses). I edited this picture to have high contrast and I also increased the black-point and I shifted the hues to red. I also used a red overlay layer to make the image as red as possible.
For the inner back cover, I could not find any photos online that gave a grunge effect while loosely resembling water. So I decided to use the app "Procreate" and use its various brushes to create my own back cover. I wanted the image to start off with a plain red base, however I wanted it to have a lot of texture (mimicking dried blood) while also having some spiral effects to loosely mimic the red bathwater. In total, this process took me 1 hour.
Here is a quick 30 second timelapse of the whole process:
We used the template to make it easier for us to transfer the image:
Avril Lavigne's "Love Sux"
Initially, I was inspired by Avril Lavigne's "Love Sux", and I tried to replicate it by using a rose with a red background as I thought it would be similar to her cover of balloons and red background. However, the roses did not provide the same contrast as the balloons and hence it did not look very aesthetically pleasing. My teammates and I also felt like it looked outdated, so I decided to do more research.

1st Draft
After looking at more red CDs, i found that most actually did not have any graphics or images on the CD. I also looked at modern CDs such as "Midnights" by Taylor swift and discovered that it did not need to be one blocked colour, instead textures and effects were used to differentiate it from other CDs. I also liked how she put a graphic in the middle of the CD.
Miley Cyrus
Radiohead
Taylor Swift
I decided to make the CD resemble a droplet/clot of blood in order to better fit the theme of the album. In order to do that To achieve this, I searched for reference images to know how to convey my concept for the design.
From these images I learned that blood has a dark middle and it goes lighter on the edges. I also found that blood usually had a white/orange highlight so I also decided to replicate that.
First Draft
After adding lighting, halftone dots, highlights at the edges.
Hence I used these base to create some drafts:
Option A
Option B
I chose to put a graphic in the middle of the CD to further show a sense of branding. For option A , I chose a heart made out of roses as it combines two of the elements present in our media products, love and roses. For option B, I decided to try a 'scrapbook' feel by using a broken heart made out of scribbles.
My team and I decided to choose option A as we felt that using a consistent font for the title was important to establish branding. We also felt that the heart graphic on option B felt fake and too cartoony.
I chose to create the record label "Rose Records" as I thought it could be interesting that her record label would have a similar theme with her album. However I did not choose a special meaning for the distributor, MD, as distributors usually do not have any input for how the album goes. I chose both of these logos to be red as I thought that black would be unintelligible against the dark red background and I thought that white would not really suit the theme.
Typically digipaks have a large eye-catching image in the front, hence I decided to use the 'rose' picture as I thought it fit the theme for the front cover of the booklet. For the back cover, I put all of the songs in the album, along with who produced, engineered, mastered, and written the song.
Radiohead broke conventions with their album "Kid A" when they released their 'secret' booklet. This booklet contained the lyrics of the songs with varying fonts to give a sense of disorderliness and disorientation. They also added graphics and images that made it seem like it was in a newspaper article. I was extremely inspired by this and decided to take some of these elements by using different fonts in my booklet as well to create a diary/scrapbook feel. However, I decided against using the display typefaces and opted instead to use handwriting fonts as I felt that it would make it seem like a journal entry. I also felt that the use of caricaturized people did not fit our theme, so I decided to seek more references.
One of the references was the digipak for The Weeknd's "After Hours.", I felt that the use of black and red really emphasizes the whole theme of the album, so I decided to incorporate that in some aspects of my digipak.
Radiohead
The Weeknd
For all the pages of the digipak, I spent 2 weeks editing and ensuring that all the images made sense with the songs its meant to represent, and in total it took me around 20 hours as I spent a long time picking fonts, images, and cutouts. I used different handwriting and calligraphy typefaces to bring home the 'scrapbook' effect, almost as if it was torn out of a journal. I also used cutouts of images that relates to the lyrics of each individual song.
In order to find the 'embellishments' that would suit my booklet, I used various key words and tags in Canva, such as "scrapbook", "torn", "texture", amongst many others.
Scrapbooking is a hobby that used by people to record memories, It includes photos and artworks, and is usually accompanied by long journal entries.
I wanted to use this style as I wanted the booklet to give the audience the feeling as if the lyrics were just ripped out the pages of the artist's journal. Which hammers down the emotions the artist felt during the creation of the album.
For the first two pages, I decided to continue with the red high contrast theme.
For Brutal: I put a cutout of lips with fangs drinking an alcoholic beverage, this was used to illustrate the lyrics "That I'll die before I drink ".
For Traitor: I used a cutout of an eye to illustrate the lyrics "Brown guilty eyes and little white lies"
For Drivers License: I used the image of cars, and a cutout of a house to give imagery to the lyrics "To finally drive up to your house"
For 1 Step Forward, 3 Steps Back : I used the phone cutout to illustrate the lyrics "Called you on the phone today"
For Deja Vu: To show imagery for the lyrics:" Car rides to Malibu, Strawberry ice cream" I chose strawberry cutouts to represent the ice cream and a cutout of a palm tree as they are common in Malibu.
For Enough For U: I used various cosmetic items and a mirror to serve as imagery for the lyrics " I wore makeup when we dated, 'Cause I thought you'd like me more"
For Happier: I decided to use the butterfly and smile imagery to illustrate the lyrics "She probably gives you butterflies, I hope you're happy"
For Jealousy, Jealousy: I used the phone and smile imagery to give the lyrics " I kinda wanna throw my phone across the room, 'Cause all I see are girls too good to be true, With paper-white teeth and perfect bodies" some imagery.
For Favorite Crime: I wanted to illustrate the lyrics "And I watched as you fled the scene, Doe-eyed as you buried me, One heart broke, four hands bloody" I used the a cutout of the deer to represent the "doe eyes", the cutout of the grave to represent how he "buried" the artist, the bloody hand to represent the "four hands bloody" and the skull and handcuffs to represent the "crime"
For Hope Ur OK: I used a hand cutout that is 'reaching out' to show how the artist is reaching out to people and hoping they are okay. I also used the sky and bird imagery to represent the lyrics "And when the clouds are ironed out. "
I decided to break conventions by including a short personalized note from CayV to her fans within the booklet, along with her autograph.
I did this to build a connection between audience and CayV.
I decided to challenge conventions by adding photocards, which is typically only present in the K-Pop industry. The reason for this is that our target audience is Gen-Z, who are usually fans of K-pop, this will immensely help the marketing of the album as it will peak the interest of K-pop fans.
Pink Panthress
Some western artists have caught onto this trend by using 'artcards' which are essentially very similar to photocards. The main difference being that in photocards, there is a back cover that has specific conventions that are usually followed.
1) Creating a album logo by keeping the same theme but using different font, shortening the title, etc.
2) Simply using the album title
3) Writing a personalized memo or giving the artist's autograph
I decided to create a logo (option 1) as I wanted to give my album more variety and to further challenge conventions. I ensured that the logo still fit with the theme of my album, I utilized the 'heart rose' branding and red color scheme to maintain consistency and reinforce the album's visual identity.
I also chose not to include artist's autograph or give a personalized memo as I have already incorporated that in the last page of the digipak so it felt redundant to add.
After doing more research, I found out that almost all K-pop albums come with at least 2 versions of albums (that audiences could choose from) that came with 2 versions of photocards.
Dark version featuring pictures with darker color palettes
Red version featuring pictures with pink/red themed pictures
I also discovered that photocards were random and audiences could only get a randomized set of photocards (i.e. any 5 out of the 45 possibilities) this was created so that audiences would buy as many albums as possible in order to get the photocard of their favorite idol.
However I could not replicate this in the same way as my artist is a solo singer. Hence I decided to combine some K-pop conventions and have the photocards be randomized, (i.e. audiences could either randomly get the dark version or the light version), in order to mirror this trend.
I worked with my teammates, Jeanie and Kimberly, to pick the best pictures to suit the theme of each version. Their views were especially valuable as they are fans of K-pop and I clueless about the topic prior to my research. For version A, I wanted us to use primarily dark colors and more professional photography, while in version B I wanted a more candid, light theme. I chose these themes to give a different feel for each digipak.
I also made sure to follow conventions of photocards by placing the logo in the middle and making it much larger than the artist's name. I also put the artist's name in the bottom of the photocard to further follow conventions
For her profile, I chose her follower count to be in the 20 millions, as I wanted to show that she is a popular artists. Many young artists in Gen-Z have this level of stardom, examples include:
I also put a song lyric in her bio as most artists reference their new album in their bio
Referencing her single "Back From The Dead"
Referencing her album "Honeymoon"
I also put a link in her bio to her komi.io which is similar to a linktree, it's use is to direct audiences to many of the artist's websites.
I wanted to break conventions and make her Instagram feed very curated, to boost her serious and mysterious aura.
original picture
first draft
I wanted the image to feel like it was taken with a fisheye lens, capturing the sense of the subject blocking out noise and creating a disorienting vibe.
At first, I selected Caylee's face, reduced the opacity and directly overlayed it on top of her face as i thought it would further create the disorienting atmosphere. However, this obscured some of her features and made the picture confusing to look at, so i decided to zoom out and use a medium shot instead of a close up shot to maintain clarity. Initially, I had also decided to change the hue of the image to red which did not give much variety to the posts, hence i decided against that. I also noted that her expression was smiling which did not fit our theme hence I tried to edit this to look more annoyed/stern by bringing the corners of her lips down.

I decided to use a red layer (with the blend mode set to 'multiply') to create the illusion of 'high contrast lighting' and so it would fit the red aesthetic we were going for. I also used the same wavey line effect that I used for the album cover to bring a sense of familiarity.
For the rest of the posts, I made sure to subtly incorporate the 'red' theme without engulfing the picture in red (i.e. by adding a heart or infusing half of the image with red).
This was done in different ways to introduce variation while maintaining consistent branding across the images.
After doing research, I realized that many artists post the new merchandise on their Instagram. A post like this usually has : the artist's name, website of their merchandise store, and a call to action to buy the merchandise (for example: "Available Now!)
Some also inform audiences where the proceeds from the merchandise will go.
In my case, I decided that it would be most appropriate for the proceeds of the merchandise will go to "The Jed Foundation", non-profit organization that protects emotional health and prevents suicide for teens and young adults, as the whole theme of our media product is to bring awareness to mental health issues, especially for young people.
I followed these conventions by:
Putting a large text stating the artist's name "CayV"
Announcing the merchandise drop "NEW MERCH"
Having the merchandise items be centered and large in the post
Stating where the proceeds go to in the left hand side "The Jed Foundation"
Writing the call to action "Available Now!" on top of the merchandise website "www.store.cayv.com"
Also, I used a background that resembled blood to tie into the branding even further. I also used paper letters to write the "new merch" to tie into the "scrapbook" theme.

Touring is an integral part of the job of a popular artist. In order to maximize on tour sales, artists would usually post the tour dates on their social media so that their audiences would be more aware of the tour.
From these examples, I noted the conventions of most tour announcements:
Prominent or large text featuring the album, artist, and sometimes location.
Tour dates listed on the left, accompanied by the city and its abbreviation.
Occasionally, inclusion of the website where tickets are available for purchase.
Consistent use of the album cover image for the tour announcement to maintain branding.
Preference for visiting capital cities or urban cities.
Location of the concert typically displayed on the right-hand side.
Jeanie and I collaborated on this story. Jeanie made the majority of it while I added the final touches. Artists will typically post stories relating to their new album as they want audiences to me more aware of it, and hence buy it.
I decided to offer three types of clothing merchandise, each available in two color options: white and black. This selection includes a unisex T-shirt and hoodie to cater to a broader audience, targeting the mass market.
Additionally, I decided to create a tank-top/crop-top option, as I found that this style is popular among young women, who are the target demographic for our artist.
I followed conventions by having the artist or album name on the clothing, as well as having the album cover on some of the clothing options.
After doing research, I realized that modern day singers with alternative pop styles usually sell very unique merchandise that is specific for their audience.
I decided to try my best to replicate this in a smaller scale by doing a sticker pack. Which is an unconventional merchandise option for singers but has also been done by a handful of artists.
I also felt like stickers fit our "scrapbook" theme very well as stickers could be used to decorate journals, diaries, and even scrapbooks!
Our Sticker Pack
In our sticker pack, I decided to keep the stickers consistent with the branding by using roses, hearts, and the color red.
I also added some snippets of lyrics from several of her songs to be made as stickers as fans may be able to resonate and relate to these lyrics which creates a deeper bond between artist and fan.
As our entire media product has the theme of 'scrapbook' and 'red' I decided that it would be appropriate for our artist to sell a "SOUR!" themed notebook/journal to further establish branding. I made 2 color variations for the journals to match with the two back covers of the photocards to further create a sense of branding.
Kimberly was in charge of editing the MV, she kept me updated every step of the way and we shared ideas about the MV on a daily basis. The app, Capcut, was used in ending the MV as it was accessible, free, and portable as it was available in many devices.
We wanted the color scheme of the MV to go from teal/green to red to show the descent of the artist's sanity. We also included conventions such as adding a title card and artist's name.
