MANIFESTO: WHO IS REINVENTING RIOT FOR?
MANIFESTO: WHO IS REINVENTING RIOT FOR?
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
well, first and foremost, everyone. everyone from your best friend to your mom to the girl you hate. it’s for cheerleaders and ugly chicks and goths and h&m ambassadors. it’s for the girls who have been apart of the revolution since ‘99 and for the ones who don’t really know what any of this is. we span all generations, all eras, and all artistic forms. we refuse to disregard any perspective on the basis of what we think a riotgrrrl should look and act like.
it’d probably be easier to tell you what we aren’t. we are not:
a carbon copy of the original riotgrrrl movement. we never could be and, frankly, we wouldn’t want to be.
a safe space for terfs, exclusionary activism, or bigotry disguised as feminism.
an exclusively literary or artistic magazine. multi-media, bitches!
a place for men to whine about women in their lives
a place for women to take down each other
a place for conservatism
a place for clean-cut, cookie cutter work
we pride ourselves on unique perspectives tackling the current political state of america. we want you to be mad. we want you to scream. we want you to be unashamed of being a girl. we want you to be fucking weird. and most of all, we want you to riot.
everything you will see in this zine was produced by people and for people. we will never include ai-generated or ai-assisted work. this is a space for all kinds of artistic creation and development, as messy and chaotic as it may be. the more diy and tacky the better.
we want to bring back the physical language of zine making. as we grow, we intend to support local bands and women in music, spread news about protests happening around the U.S, and much, much more. revolution doesn’t come from nothing, people.
so i guess to answer the question at hand, here’s who we make reinventing riot for:
the nerd girls who were shoved in lockers
trans people who never felt included in the movement
anyone under oppression from the current state of the world
people of color who have been silenced in the past
queers
freaks
weirdos
writers
artists
creators
women with a large mouth
women with attitude
women who were “asking for it”
women walking down the street at night with a keychain clutched in hand
screamers
rioters
people who refuse to settle down
protestors
sex workers
people who just can’t seem to get published
people deemed “too controverisal”
and everyone else who has ever felt like they don’t have a voice.
we urge you to send in any work to reinventing riot. chances are, if you fit our vision, you’ll be accepted. we want to spread our message anyway we can, and we hope that you’ll feel inspired to share something with us.
riot does not pair well with secrecy or silence. girl power forever!
