Our next unit will be continuing with multiplication and division. We are now looking to memorize all of the multiplication facts up to 10. Please work on this at home. This foundation is so important as they move foward into fractions, decimals and beyond! Homework this week is an addition/subtraction review. Students will be taking an addition/subtraction quiz this week to check in with theise strategies and standards.

This week, students will be reading multiple texts and comparing their point of view with those of the characters.

We are continuing to review all concepts for our multiplication and division unit. Students will be taking the unit assessment this week. Homework this week will be a math review. I strongly recommend completing the homework early to make sure they have the extra review opportunity prior to tthe assessment. Students also need to be memorizing their multiplication facts to automaticity.

  • Fit Kids Session 2 after school classes are enrolling this week. The deadline is November 6th for kids that go to KOC and November 8th for everyone else.

There will be a coding class for students 3rd-5th grade on Thursdays taught by Mrs. Nicol and Mr. McCormick. It's called Beyond the Hour of Code: Code.org intermediate and advanced programs, create animations and games with Scratch, learn functions and more with Bitsbox.

Students are wrapping up their animal research on the animal of their choice. We will be turning that into an informational writing. Some students may need to do additional research/notetaking at home to catch up. The focus is on the animal's habitat, diet , and adaptations.

We are continuing to explore multiplication concepts. We'll be looking at equal groups of things, arrays, and creating story problems for repeated addition and multiplication sentences. Ex. "John reads 6 pages a night, how many pages does John read in 3 nights?"

Language Arts:

We're learning how to use text features to help us comprehend informational text. We will be continuing with Animal Adaptations. Students have selected an animal to research. We are learning about research tools and strategies to gather information. If students choose to, they may bring in additional resources (articles, books, etc.) from home to add to their research materialas. The focus is on the aniamals habitat, diet , and adaptations.

This week, we will continue to spiral addition and subtraction with word problems. We will also be sarting our next unit - Multiplication and Division Concepts. We'll start by looking at equal groups and connecting repeated addition to multiplication.

Language Arts:

This week we will be continuing with Animal Adaptations. We will be working on using text features to help us understand informational text. In this unit, students will be researching an animal of their choice , learning about their habitat, diet, and adaptations.

In the Classroom....

Math:

This week, we will be reviewing for our upcoming Unit 1 assessment. This will include number sense (representing numbers in different ways) estimating/rounding, addition/subtraction, and data and graphs. Students are expected to explain their answers using numbers, words, and/or pictures.

Language Arts:

This week we will wrap up our first unit, which included story structure, characterization, different types of folktales (myth, fable, legend, fairy tale), context clues, etc. We will be starting our new unit on Animal Adaptations.

Math:

We are focusing on surveys, data, and graphing this week. Students will work in groups to conduct their own surveys and represent the data on a variety of graphs. We'll continue to review rounding, addition, and subtraction.

Language Arts:

We'll review concepts from our first unit, including characterization, different types of folktales (myth, fable, legend, fairy tale), context clues, etc.

We are continuing to practice place value, and rounding 2 and 3 digit numbers to the nearest 10 and 100. We're also working on addition and subtraction using a variety of strategies. Students have an expert guide in their binders.

Language Arts:

We will be focusing on different types of folktales (myth, fable, legend, fairy tale) as well as using context clues to dind the meaning of unknown workds.

In the classroom....

Math:

  • We are continuing to work on place value and rounding this week. We want students to be able to think about numbers flexibly. For example: 239 could be represented by 2 hundereds, 3 tens, and 9 ones OR 1 hundred 13 tens, and 9 ones. Give your child a number and see how many ways they can represent it.

Language Arts:

Our focus is on Close Reading and ACEing short answer questions . Click on the links for more information. We are also woriking on story structure (setting, plot, characters etc.) as well as character analysis. This week's story is King Midas. Students and families can access it through Benchmark using their Clever login.
