THE PROCESS OF EDUCATION
MY CONNECTIONS WITH COMMUNITY
1) I was the Director of a private academic school group and interacted weekly with students who had special needs. We were able to develop tactics to include two children with autism into the classroom activities by working closely with the teacher and the parents on strategies. I was able to interact with the mother on a personal level and this helped me gain insights into the home life and develop strategies in the classroom that would better help the student.
2) I am the leader of a children’s program at my church. I sit with two children weekly and go over their catechism and memory work. As a substitute teacher, I have both of these students in class and I am able to effectively help them when they struggle.
4) I am a parent volunteer at the local Youth Hockey League of Rice Lake. I have had many interactions with families that I teach at school through the hockey organization. Understanding the home situation of my students and parent expectations and behaviors helps me guide the students ability to achieve academic success. I am currently working with a student who needs help reading and I interact with him through hockey. We have the common ground of hockey to talk about and it helps relieve tension in the student and he is able to focus more effectively on his reading intervention lesson.
MY WORK AS A LEARNER
1) I took a training from the Institute for Excellence in writing, a 4 credit continuing education seminar. I learned keyword outline strategies, ideas on how to focus student’s writing, thesis writing skills and fused outline for multiple sources skills. I was able to take this back to the classroom and students were able to effectively read 3 sources and write 3 different outlines and fuse them together into one outline to effectively write a paper.
2) I took a Classical Grammar continuing education course to brush up on my grammar skills and learn new techniques to introduce grammar and make it fun for students. I learned about Daily language reviews and sentence correcting exercises to help students understand the most common grammar mistakes and be able to fix them.
3) I have learned a movie making software program so I can make better video presentations. I hope to share this skill with students and have them complete an assignment of writing a product commercial and filming the rough version of the commercial and then take the film to editing and make a short commercial video.
MY WORK AS A LEADER/COLLABORATOR
1) As the Director of the private education group, I led teacher trainings every six weeks to collaborate and share ideas on how to present material to the classes. We would often decide on a specific activity or song to introduce a concept. For example, we all chose to use sign language to help memorize the history timeline in social studies class.
3) I have read the book, Emotional Intelligence and it has increased my understanding of all the different types of intelligences. I am better be able to guide my students to build emotional skills in addition to academic skills. I will help students role play and have scripts to help them learn good emotional responses and inferior responses. Hopefully making them aware that they have to be emotionally intuitive in order to get results.
2) I led an inservice training on child protection policies and approved child protection methods for our school group. We trained staff on statistics, their responsibilities and appropriate behaviors between staff and students. We had no child protection incidents.d students. We had no child protection incidents.
4) I read Dale Carnegie's book, How to Win Friends and Influence people. I can educate my students about the effective ways to build rapport with friends and co-workers. I will help students learn to identify what their goals and desired outcomes are for a situation and help them strategize effective ways to reach their goals.
