On behalf of National Coalition on Indigenous Higher Education, I wish to congratulate the Saint Mary’s University on its 3rd International Conference on Cultural Studies.
This international congress is indeed very timely and appropriate as we face the transition challenges after the COVID-19 pandemic, which is considered as one of the most difficult times not only in the country, but in the world. Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic of lockdowns, restrictions, and many other hurdles, SMU has gone above and beyond its mission as an educational institution to challenge one another to explore and pursue relevant, innovative and breakthrough ideas through research and development.
The theme of the conference is “Nature and Culture in a Changing World: COVID 19 Aftermath and Glocal Responses.” In the face of the educational crisis due to the coronavirus, the value and importance of having this conference at present time is recognized. As an advocate for IPs, I can attest to how difficult it has been, especially to IP Education. It is pertinent that discussions on the impact of the pandemic on education, global politics, service, and community engagement; as well as nature and culture will be tackled. Based on the line-up of crucial topics and the high caliber presenters, there will be significant contributions in developing educational learning opportunities for both educators and students.
This conference plays a valuable role in promoting Indigenous knowledge and wisdom through building a learning environment for instructors and students. May your participation in this conference encourage collaboration within our institutions and inspire concrete action in building a learning environment for the betterment of the Indigenous Peoples communities and the world.
