The Audition Process will take part in 4 different stages listed below:
Learn
Flipgrid
Live Callbacks
Announce Roles
Students in Year 5 and 6 will be taught in their Performing Arts lessons how to perform a simple dance, read some lines and sing a song. Students will have the opportunity to practice these skills in the lessons.
We will learn this dance in class and be filmed as an ensemble. You might like to be part of a special dance ensemble.
We will learn how to sing a song together - in your flipgrid you will sing solo in the callback you'll sing in groups of 3-5.
To tell us what role you are hoping to audition for please fill out this GOOGLE FORM
Both year 5 and 6 students will receive some Performing Arts classtime in order to be able to submit a Flipgrid video. They may opt into doing this at home where they can spend some extra time on their Flipgrid.
The Dance will be filmed as a group by the teacher.
The Acting and Singing may be filmed by the students themselves in Flipgrid.
EXPECTATIONS:
Flipgrid must contain their full body - including face. So that we know who is performing and how they move their body when they act.
The Flipgrid must show the students' face when singing. It is advised to include the backing track in with the sound.
The student must indicate which Acting role they would prefer to play using Google Forms - and must indicate that they intend to be present in the lead up to the Concert for rehearsals.
It is NOT compulsory to audition - but in order to be considered for a lead role, even a smaller role, it is advised students prepare to audition.
Students may be asked to read another role in the live auditions than their preferred role or original role they auditioned as - this may be because the audition panel wants to see flexibility in the student's acting skills.
Students will audition in front of a panel of 3-4 staff. In their audition they will be asked to sing the song in a group of 3-5 students at a time as well as perform their lines.
Students will audition whilst wearing their school uniform.
Staff will consider student's performance holistically - including their performance in conducting themselves according to the NORMS.
If a student is not asked to perform in a Call Back Audition, this does not necessarily mean they have not received a lead role in the play - it just means their video audition showed us what we needed to know and that we do not need to see more from that student at this time.
The roles for the Lead Characters will be announced at the same time as Class Items are announced. If a year 5 or 6 student had not received a Lead Character role this does NOT mean they are not part of the production. All students will perform as part of their class item on the stage. There will also be other roles - such as back stage, ticketing, front of house, green room assistance, design helpers, technical helpers, speech givers etc.
It is very normal to feel nervous when performing infront of other people. Mild symptoms of nervousness can include: having a dry mouth, involuntary shaking, frozen muscles, sweating, asking what if questions, flushing cheeks and/or feeling an adrenaline rush.
Major nervousness however can interfere with breathing, and can lead to catastrophising/anxieties/worries.
It is important to recognise the symptoms of mild nervousness before major symptoms arise. It is a good idea to drink water and bring a drink bottle to your audition. Other ways to manage nervousness include:
Open them Shut them - repeatedly opening and shutting your hands. Make a tight fist, then open your hand to stretch.
Occupy your mind with something else - use a fidget, read a book or do a crossword/sudoku.
Positive Self Talk - Stand in a superhero/strong pose and say amazing things about yourself to yourself. (Even if at first it feels like a lie)
Jitter Jumps - If you need to move do some star jumps or kick around a hackysack
Mindful breathing - slow your breathing down - breathe in through your nose for 5 seconds and out through your mouth for 5 seconds - put your hand in front of your mouth to see if the breath is warm - aim to make your breath as warm as possible.
