Class overview

Welcome to Computer Education & Technology class!

It is my goal to provide students with grade-appropriate digital literacy through fun and engaging activities so that they may develop as 21st century learners.

During our first week of school we will be discussing Internet safety and what it means to be a digital citizen. An Acceptable Use Policy form will be sent home and will need to be signed by both the student and parent/guardian to allow the student to be able to use the Internet at school.

Students in grades K-2 will focus on beginner computer skills. We will use online resources, apps and educational games, as well as ‘unplugged’ learning materials. Educational games serve a vital role in fostering collaboration, critical thinking, communication, creativity and fine motor skills. In addition, we will also be exploring the world of coding.

Students in 3-8 will use Google G-Suite, focusing on Google Docs, Google Slides, Google Sheets, Google Forms and Google Draw. Students will learn the basics of coding as well. Grades 6-8 will become familiar with web design, manipulating digital photography and lastly my favorite graphic design!

From the first day of class your child will become part of an online learning community as they access Google Classroom. They will be given tutorials on how to collaborate with their teacher to access/submit assignments, communicate with their teacher, work in groups and use Google Meets. I strongly feel it's important for your child to quickly learn how to navigate Google classroom in the event we should have to return to remote learning. While it's not my intention to send homework, I may ask them to submit or complete a task to reinforce the skill that was demonstrated in class.

I encourage students and parents to discuss any classroom resource issues first with their child’s teacher. However, I will offer office hours for any student or parent needing a tutorial in how to use any of the abovementioned apps or basic troubleshooting. This will also be offered in a remote learning environment as well.
