ATHLETIC ADMINISTRATION CHANGES ON THE LEDGE FOR 2023-24

Spring is (finally) in the air!  It is a time of growth and change and with this message, I wish to inform you of an important personnel change that will occur on the Ledge for the 2023-24 school year.

Mr. Greg Hoffmann has served SMSA as Athletic Director since 2016.  He has recently announced his decision to retire at the end of this academic year. We are grateful to Mr. Hoffmann for his excellent service to the Springs community.  His consistent professionalism and care of student athletes, parents, and coaches has been distinguished, and has made a positive difference.  He is a most dedicated and knowledgeable leader who has gracefully helped SMSA to manage the many complexities of athletic administration, including 25 co-curricular sports and more than 100 coaches and Booster Club volunteers.  A lifelong educator, leader and coach, Mr. Hoffmann also taught math in middle school during his time at SMSA.

Directly before accepting his role at the Springs, Mr. Hoffmann served at Winnebago Lutheran Academy for 29 years.  While at WLA, he taught accounting, Algebra I & II, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Physics, Physical Education and Lifetime Sports.  In addition, he was the WLA Athletic Director from 2008-2014. Coach Hoffmann enjoyed seven conference championships as a head coach. Earlier in his career, Mr. Hoffmann was a classroom teacher, administrator, head coach and Athletic Director for 11 years at St. Matthew’s Lutheran School in Janesville.

Again, we are grateful to Greg Hoffmann for establishing successful habits and practices for us to follow on the Ledge.  A generous and valued member of the SMSA Leadership Team - Mr. Hoffman's positive, creative and collaborative style will be long remembered! We wish him happiness, joy, and good health in his well deserved retirement!

Like with all changes, this transition provides SMSA an opportunity to consider ways that we may grow as an organization through continuous improvement.  To that end, at this time SMSA leadership sees an opportunity to restructure system administration of athletics for grades 5-12.  Therefore, beginning in 2023-24, athletic administration and leadership on the Ledge shall be expanded to include two positions. The new structure is designed as a dynamic partnership that shall include both an Athletic Director and an Athletic Administrator

At this time, I am pleased to announce that Mrs. Kelly Mueller, at the request of President Akey, has accepted the newly created role of Athletic Administrator for the 2023-24 school year!

Mrs. Mueller is a valued member of the SMSA Leadership Team and has served as Enrollment Director since 2017.  Under Kelly’s leadership, system enrollment has grown 6% on the Ledge in the past six years. As many know, Mrs. Mueller has also been actively engaged with athletics at the Springs, providing  support to the Athletic Director  since 2016.  In addition, she has coached both middle school and high school volleyball during her time on the Ledge.  In 2009, Mrs. Mueller helped found the Junior Ledger Basketball Club, and was also an active member of the SMSA Athletic Booster Club from 2010-2018.

A proud graduate of Northwestern University, Mrs. Mueller earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Education and Social Policy.  A scholar-athlete at Northwestern, Kelly was a four year letter winner in basketball and an NCAA tournament participant.

Before attending NU, Kelly Byrne Mueller was a three sport athlete earning nine varsity letters at Brookfield East High School.  She earned numerous All Conference, All State, and All Area honors during her stellar career, including Braveland Conference Player of the Year in Basketball and Miss Wisconsin Basketball in 1984.  In 2010, Kelly was inducted into the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Hall of Fame as a member of the inaugural class of female players.

Mrs. Mueller will be assuming her new role in July, and together with Mr. Hoffmann will be working to assure a smooth transition for athletic administration on the Ledge.  Among their first responsibilities will be engaging with administration to cultivate candidates for the role of Athletic Director.  The job is posted for INTERNAL candidates through May 1stPlease visit the "Careers" section of SMSA's website to view the job posting and for more information about this position.

Kelly Mueller shall remain the point of contact for all K-12 enrollment inquiries and related processes. She will also be working closely with the Leadership Team to ensure a smooth transition to a new Enrollment Director.  The posting for the Enrollment Director position is also available to be viewed in the "Careers" section of SMSA's website.

Again, with a heart of gratitude for their service and leadership to SMSA, we thank Greg Hoffmann and Kelly Mueller.

Our Lady of the Ledge, pray for us,

Eamonn O'Keeffe

J-Term Comes to The Ledge!

We are delighted to announce an exciting new academic innovation at St. Mary’s Springs Academy for our high school students that will begin during the 2023-24 school year! In January 2024, SMSA will initiate January Term  (sometimes known as “Winterim” or “Interim” in some colleges and high schools) - more commonly referred to as “J-Term!”  This initiative has been in research and development for more than a year.  The J-Term Work Team, composed of a dozen SMSA educators, have forwarded programming recommendations which have been fully reviewed and approved by the Academic Affairs Committee of the Board of Directors.

Just like with Semester I & II, J-Term is a required academic term and included in the cost of annual tuition.  Instead of registering for six or seven courses like with Semester I & II, in the 13 day J-Term, students shall register for a singular course that will meet daily for four hours each morning.  The learning time designated to J-Term classes is necessary to fulfill the DPI and Archdiocesan instructional minute requirements for SMSA.  Given these total instructional minutes, J-Term courses shall earn the same academic credit value as a full semester course (0.5 credit)!  Lunch shall be served daily during the 13 day term as normal.  During each afternoon of J-Term, students will be organized to engage with required community service experiences, college and career readiness planning, and /or social emotional learning programs.  Our Campus Ministry, Counseling Office and Pupil Services teams are very excited to systematically integrate these value-added formation services for our Ledgers during J-Term!

Perhaps J-Term may best be described by it’s approved vision:

J-Term at St. Mary's Springs Academy shall spark student interest in learning through a variety of non-traditional courses. Enhancing SMSA's regular curriculum through innovative styles of teaching and enrichment, J-term courses will provide opportunities for project-based learning, interdisciplinary explorations, community connections, and  service-learning, along with time to focus on social-emotional development and college and career planning. J-Term will highlight our school’s distinctive vision of student growth that is aligned with discernment of personal interests and gifts.

In addition to the many positive impacts on learning, the installation of J-Term at SMSA shall affect how the annual school calendar is organized in the high school.  Adding January Term will enable balanced instructional days in Semester I & II, with the added benefit of concluding Semester I before Christmas vacation each year.  As such, the approved high school calendar for 2023-24 shall be organized as follows:

Please view the calendar for the upcoming 2023-2024 Academic Year to see how the dates above will fit together.

As we move forward, a J-Term course curriculum guide will be finalized and made available to students and parents in October.  Students will register for their J-Term classes in fall of each year. Students will identify a first, second and third option of courses when they register for J-Term each year.

A sample daily schedule for the J-Term can be viewed here.

Here are some additional facts about J-Term at SMSA:

Our high school team of educators is very excited to begin offering J-Term on the Ledge!  Our planning for this initiative has been interesting and inspirational.  J-Term planning has been focused firmly on providing value added and mission driven educational experiences for our Ledgers.  We believe that this new academic term will positively differentiate St. Mary’s Springs Academy in the region.  We will be the only high school in the Archdiocese and the Flyway Conference to offer J-Term!

As we continue to strive for improvement and ways to advance learning at SMSA, we are confident that J-Term will be a treasured and distinguishing feature of the Ledger experience.  We look forward to revealing the finalized initial course curriculum next fall, and launching J-Term next January!  Until then, please pray that our SMSA planning process will continue successfully to fulfill the vision of J-Term on the Ledge.

Another Successful Year for Warming Shelter Lunches!

For the past five years, the Student Council has led the high school service project to make and deliver 30 warming shelter lunches weekly to the Salvation Army! The lunches are prepared and delivered every Wednesday from November through March. A food drive was held during homecoming week to collect enough peanut butter, jelly, bottled water, snacks, fruit cups, lunch bags, and sandwich bags to prepare and fill the lunches. Every Wednesday, a different homeroom is assigned the task of assembling the lunches under the guidance of the Student Council officers.

Our food drive was so successful this year that we were able to donate the excess items to the Salvation Army's food pantry. Special thanks to our Student Council officers: Nolan Baudry, Sophie Vande Slunt, Lauren Cobb, and Sydney Pitz for all their hard work. Also, special thanks to Donovan McGalloway for delivering the lunches to the shelter every week.

Marian University's Pre-College Program Now Open!

Scholarship Information Needed from the Class of 2023

Mr. Stamatakos would like all seniors who’ve received scholarship money from any colleges/universities they’ve been admitted to to report that information to him. SMSA uses this information in our recognition of seniors at Seniors Honors Convocation in May. We list the schools that awarded our seniors scholarships (but not the award amounts of those scholarships) in the list of students’ accomplishments during that program.

SMSA also has many important people, both within and outside the walls of SMSA, who like to see that information. That includes President Akey, the Board of Directors, Mrs. Tank in the Advancement Office, and potential donors and strategic partners. If we can say, for example, that the Class of 2023 was offered a total $15,000,000 in scholarship money over the next year four years from colleges/universities and community-based organizations that’s pretty impressive!

To clarify: Mr. Stamatakos only wants information about scholarships earned. Grants (from schools, the state of Wisconsin, and/or the Federal Government) don’t count. Sometimes schools will throw in small “extras” like Visit Awards or Early FAFSA Filer Awards. Students can also report those to Mr. Stamatakos.

Please use this online form to report all of the scholarship money earned:

http://bit.ly/43sOMcu

Students may complete this form one of two ways:

1. Upload scanned copies or pictures of acceptance/award letters to this form and submit it. Students may upload up to ten files to this form at once.

2. List the names, sources, and amounts (per year) of any scholarships received individually and submit the form. You may provide information about up to ten awards using this form.

The deadline to complete and submit this form is Friday, May 12th. If you receive any scholarships after that deadline passes, please E-mail Mr. Stamatakos with that information or with questions...especially if you don’t know exactly what information you need to report!

Use Your Scrip Credits for Continuing Education!

Is your youngest SMSA student graduating this June?  If you answered "yes" we need to know where to apply your Scrip credits acquired this year.  That's right - your Scrip credits can be applied to education at a four-year college, a two-year college, or ANY other tuition-based school as long as we know where your student is headed!

Click here to download and complete the required form and return it to the Scrip office by Wednesday, May 31st (the end of the Scrip fiscal year).

Have an undecided student?  No worries, select "future use" on the form and receive your credit at the end of next fiscal year.

AND... sending your youngest off to further their education doesn't mean you should stop using Scrip!  Continue to purchase Scrip, receive a check to apply to your student's school, and continue to support SMSA.  You can be a Ledger forever!

Scholarship Website for SMSA Seniors

Last year, Mr. Stamatakos created a website that SMSA seniors can use to learn about local scholarship opportunities that they can apply for to help fund their college educations at two and four-year colleges. The website will continue to be updated throughout the coming months as updated applications for the current senior class are received by Mr. Stamatakos. Mr. Stamatakos will also E-mail out applications for these scholarships to the senior class and to parents of seniors as he receives them...so please check your E-mail for these opportunities!

Ledger Learning Guide

The Ledger Learning Guides are a rebranded version of the “Virtual Learning Guide” that was designed in March 2020 to serve parents, students, and teachers at the start of the virtual learning term. Moving forward, whether students are learning on the Ledge in person or online at home, the LLG will provide a weekly overview of course learning targets and access to course links. Teachers will be updating course pages and learning expectations prior to the beginning of each new academic week.

The Ledger Learning Guide will not be as comprehensive or detailed as Google Classroom or other course calendars/schedules but does provide a meaningful overview of all SMSA courses and content being learned.

The Ledger Learning Guide for the 2022-2023 Academic Year can be viewed here.
