Chase Center TAKE 2--Warriors Game!
March 13th, 2026--As we make our way to the last day of Enrichment Week, is there any way to cap of the Career in Athletics Course any better than a trip to see the 7-Time NBA Champions play on a Friday Weekend? Well, that is exactly what the Career in Athletics crew did! The students were able to see the Warriors take on one of the Western Conference Playoff Contenders in the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Despite the Warriors playing with lineup without the star talent of Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler, and Draymond Green, the team was able to keep the game close until the Timberwolves ultimately pulled away for the 127-117 victory. Nonetheless, the students had a blast cheering on their favorite NBA team. In fact, they enjoyed seeing themselves featured on the Jumbotron as the name "Saint Mary's College High School" was featured on the Warriors "Warm Welcome" feature. There was no better way to wrap up the 2026 edition of the Careers in Athletic Course, and we look forward to what this course has in store for 2027! Many thanks go to the students who participated in the course, as well as to Mr. Mohun & Mr. Flemer who put this course together.
UC Berkeley Tour
March 12th, 2026--As we headed into the final two days of Enrichment Week, the Careers in Athletics crew traveled not so far away from Saint Mary's College High School, making a 10-minute drive to the #1 public university in North America, UC Berkeley. In addition to it's prestigious academic recognition, UC Berkeley is also well know for their athletic programs that has produced various professional & olympic athletes, including Saint Mary's College High School's own from the Class of 2008, Marcus Semien of the New York Mets.
To kickoff the visit, the students had the chance to meet with one of UC Berkeley's members of the Cameron Institute, Ryan Rodriguez, who is a Senior Career Development Advisor where he helps athletes identify the next steps to pursuing career opportunities once their athletic careers are over. Ryan was able to inform our students of the various roles that go within a collegiate athletic department, and even also undergraduate opportunities & mentorship programs where students who are not playing in college are able to work for different teams affiliated with the university. This meeting presented our students with the ideas & possibilities of how to pursue a career in athletics without necessarily being an athlete.
Following our meeting with Ryan, the students had the luxury of being shown through Haas Pavilion & Pete Newell Court, which is home to UC Berkeley's basketball, volleyball, and gymnastics programs. In addition, the students were able to walk through the athletic training offices & the weight room of Haas Pavilion as well, learning about the different aspects & athletic-related careers one could pursue at the Division I level. After leaving Haas Pavilion, the students were then led to Edwards Stadium, which is the home venue of the UC Berkeley Soccer Programs where Saint Mary's alum, Wyatt Meyer (C/O of 2020), played excelled for the Golden Bears. In addition, Edwards Stadium is also the home of UC Berkeley's Track & Field where our very own AP US History Teacher, Jeff Rogers, held the record for high jump in program history.
Following our time down on the lower side of campus, the students then made the hike up towards Memorial Stadium, the home of the University's Football Program. Memorial Stadium is also the location of their largest Strength & Conditioning and Athletic Training Facilities as well, where the students were able to walk through and ask current student-athletes & athletic trainers various questions about their roles what life is like as a student-athlete or an athletic trainer at a Division I program.
The visit at UC Berkeley was truly a rewarding experience for our students as they became more aware of the endless opportunities they could pursue in a sport-related career and the necessary steps they can take to fulfill that.
San Jose City College & Athletic Facilities
March 11th, 2026--Following the past two days spent in San Francisco, the Career in Athletics group ventured further south to San Jose where they had the pleasure of meeting & learning from not only one of the greats in the field of Athletic Training, but also a well respected & appreciated individual who was part of the Saint Mary's community for 13 years--James Quach. Following his 13-year tenure as the Athletic Trainer & Sports Medicine Teacher at Saint Mary's College High School, Quach was hired by San Jose City College to be the Head Athletic Trainer and has served in that role for just over 3 years.
The Career in Athletics group were able to follow Quach on a tour of the athletic facilities, providing explanations on what purpose the facilities served and which athletic programs use them. The favorite part of the tour was walking through the athletic training room consisting of all the sophisticated equipment that he uses to treat athletes. In addition, some of the questions that were asked by the group allowed Quach to look back at the fun times & memories at Saint Mary's College High School that he was very appreciative of.
Overall, the tour provided the students with an opportunity to learn about the career path of one of the more gifted Athletic Trainers there is, and even inspiring some to possibly pursue a career in athletic training if they so choose to.
Chase Center & Golden State Warriors Offices
March 10th, 2026--Following their first day in the city visiting Oracle Park, the Career in Athletics crew returned to San Francisco (once again) to visit the Chase Center & the offices belonging to the employees of the Golden State Warriors. Upon arrival, the crew met up with not only a long time employee of the Warriors, but also a beloved alum of the Saint Mary's College High School Class of 2009, Aalim Moor. As a student of Saint Mary's, Aalim starred for the Varsity Boys Basketball team where he was key contributor all four years, making three trips to the NorCal Championship Game & one trip to the CIF State Championship Game in 2008. Following his high school career, Aalim earned a scholarship to play basketball for the San Jose State Spartans before ultimately transitioning into a role with the Warriors organization that he's been a part of since 2015.
Aalim was also joined by his fellow colleague, Devonte Morris, who showed us around the Warriors office building & explained the different roles & departments that make the Golden State Warriors operation successful. As a nice treat for the students, they gave everyone a Warriors hat, a Warriors flag, and even a Stephen Curry bobblehead. In addition, and to also even make the day more memorable for the students, Aalim & Devonte took the students back to the Chase Center where they got the opportunity to walk on the very court the Warriors players play on & where historic franchise moments have been made. Truly an exciting & memorable moment for the students that will remember forever, and which could not have been done without the generosity of both Aalim & Devonte. In fact, what Aalim & Devonte said when asked what their favorite part about working for the Warriors organization was the kindness & welcoming environment that their colleagues show on a consistent basis, and that is exactly what Aalim & Devonte provided for the students.
Oracle Park Tour--San Francisco Giants
March 9th, 2026--As the Career in Athletics Enrichment Week Course embarked on its 2026 campaign, students had the opportunity to visit Oracle Park in San Francisco, the home of the San Francisco Giants. The day consisted of meeting with various employees of the Giants who hold more "behind the scenes" positions compared to your favorite ball players, coaches, and general managers, but still play a valuable role in the overall operation of the organization and Oracle Park itself.
The students were able to hear about not only the different roles the Giants employees had, but also their own life journeys & experiences of how they got to where they are today, while providing important advice & takeaways for our students when they reach a point in their own lives when they are applying for jobs & pursuing a career they would be passionate about. A major takeaway was always having confidence in yourself, being able to network with others, and having the right attitude and behavior.
Following the Q & A session and a trip to the Food Trucks for lunch, the students returned to Oracle Park for a tour of the facility where they learned about the history of the San Francisco Giants ever since their time in New York at the Polo Grounds prior to their arrival into San Francisco in 1958 where they played at Candlestick Park, the necessary planning to keep the Giants in San Francisco in 1992, and the construction of Oracle Park that was finalized in 2000. The tour also focused on the history of Giants' greats such as Willie Mays, Will Clark, Barry Bonds, and Buster Posey (to name a few) as well as the recent success of the franchise winning 3 World Series titles in a span of 5 seasons (2010, 2012, 2014).
Hi Everyone!
Welcome to the Career in Athletics Enrichment Week Course Page. My name is Kevin Flemer and I’m the leader of the Career in Athletics Course along with my colleague, Mr. Denis Mohun. I have led this course for the past five years and each year has brought a lot of fun & excitement for the students who previously participated in the course.
Some of the venues this week will include a trip to Oracle Park, the Chase Center, San Jose City College, UC Berkeley, and the Chase Center once more for the students to go see the Warriors take on the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday the 13th.
What students will learn throughout the week are the endless career opportunities one can pursue in an athletic-related field, and/or in a college & professional setting, other than needing to be a college or professional athlete to make those dreams come true. We will speak to individuals who work in athletic training, strength & conditioning, academic advisory roles, compliance officers, team operations members, and members of the I.T. Department just to name a handful of occupations & jobs that students will learn about this week.
We are looking forward to a fun & exciting week, and can’t wait to get the week started!
