Hello! My name is Mary Burke. I'm excited to be back at school and teaching fifth grade again this year. I love this age group! They're more independent than the primary students, but not as grown up as the middle schoolers. They're just that perfect in-between age!
I have been a teacher since 1991. I have a Bachelor's Degree from Fontbonne University and a Master's Degree from Webster University. I'm certified in Religious Education, Early Childhood Education, and Elementary Education. At the beginning of my teaching career, I taught first and third grades in Parkway School District for five years. I stepped away from the classroom when my first child was born. As a "stay-home" mom, I became more involved in my parish, St. Simon the Apostle. I especially enjoyed working with the children in my parish. As a second grade PSR teacher for nine years, I loved helping my students and their families prepare for First Reconciliation and First Communion. I also served the children in my parish as a VBS leader, as a catechist for Children's Liturgy of the Word, and as a moderator for the Mary, the First Disciple Program (Marian Award).
When my oldest was in kindergarten at St. Simon's, I started volunteering at school. It was during that time that I got to know Mrs. Freiling, SMMA’s former principal. In 2011, I returned to teaching as a substitute teacher for St. Simon's and Lindbergh School District. I enjoyed working with numerous teachers and hundreds of children during that time. In August 2014, I accepted a one-year contract to teach fifth grade at Crestwood Elementary in Lindbergh School District. The 2015/2016 school year was my first one at SMMA. When I'm not working, I love to spend time with my family.
As a parent of three children who have attended Catholic grade schools and high schools, I know the sacrifices parents make to send their students to SMMA. My main goals, aside from keeping my students safe, are to strengthen their faith and deepen their understanding of Catholic beliefs and traditions, and to guide them to live virtuous lives, as we all journey toward the ultimate goal of joining the saints in heaven. I’m always looking for new ideas for our fifth grade Religion program.
I look forward to working with all of the fifth grade families. Please feel free to contact me anytime. Fast Direct is the best way for parents to reach me. May God bless all of us with a happy, healthy school year!
Sincerely,
Mary Burke
