Introduction and Course Outline:
United States history is the history of a great experiment in representative democracy. This year you will learn about the structure and function of your government and the recent history of the United States. The major objective of this course is to provide you with an understanding of the basic principles and cultural heritage that support our form of government so that you can become informed, committed participants in our democracy.
The US History and Government curriculum is divided into the following units of study:
US Geography & The Development of the US
The Constitution: The Foundations for the United States Democratic Republic (1789-1865)
Industrialization of the United States
The Progressive Movement: Response to the Challenges of Industrialization & Urbanization
Prosperity and Depression (1917-1940)
The United States in an Age of Global Crisis (1933-1950)
The World in Uncertain Times (1950-Present)
Grading:
All students are required to take the US History & Government Midterm in January and the Regents Exam in June.
The Midterm exam will count for a significant portion of the 3rd Quarter Grade.
The Regents Exam is a significant portion of your final grade for the year.
All assessments will be promptly scored and your grades will be available to you through the online grade book.
Quarterly Grades will be a combination of the following:
Summative (i.e. tests, essays), Formative (i.e classwork, packets), Homework & Professionalism
Students who miss a test due to a LEGAL absence must make up the test within THREE (3) school days.
Class Rules:
Be respectful of one another’s ideas and opinions!
Attendance is monitored daily. Absences or lateness will reduce your class participation grade.
Homework is graded on a weekly basis.
School disciplinary policy will be followed exactly.
When necessary, I will contact your parents or guardians.
Required Materials:
The following must be brought to class EACH DAY:
A thick spiral notebook and a folder for handouts or a three ring binder with loose-leaf paper.
Pens, pencils with erasers and highlighters
Extra Help:
Extra help is always available by appointment.

Note: A final grade may be overridden by the classroom instructor based on a semester/year review of the student’s work and mastery of subject material
