Class Overview
We are going to be learning so many new and exciting things! We use the Wit and Wisdom curriculum for both 4th and 5th grade ELA. It uses complex, authentic texts, and fine art instead of traditional basal readers. Students build deep content knowledge, vocabulary, and critical reading, writing, and speaking skills aligned directly to Tennessee academic standards.
About me
My name is Mrs. Jessica West and I am SO excited to be your ELA teacher this year! I have lived in Smith county my entire life, and attended Forks River and Smith County High School. I received my bachelor's degree from Tennessee Tech University and my master's from Bethel University. I have taught at DES for 15 years. I am married to Josh and have three wonderful children named Ava, Paxton, and Luke, who have all attended DES.

As a 4th and 5th grade ELA teacher, I believe literacy is the foundation of lifelong learning and empowers students to become thoughtful, compassionate, and confident individuals. My goal is to not only teach reading and writing, but also to instill confidence, empathy, and a passion for learning that students will carry with them far beyond our classroom walls.
