Class overview
This is a course that uses problem situations, physical models, and appropriate technology to extend algebraic thinking and engage student reasoning. It includes the study of the concepts of functions, solving equations, slope as rates of change and, proportionality. Students will use classroom discussion to represent, explore, and develop abstract concepts. The use of appropriate technology will help students apply mathematics in an increasingly technological world.
About me
My name is Frank Ruckman. I entered teaching a little later in life and have really enjoyed the decision to enter this career. I grew up in Westmoreland TN and graduated in 1990. I attended and graduated MTSU, where I met my wife Stepanie, in 1994 and received my commission as an Officer in the US Air Force. I worked as a Missileer in the 320th Space and Missile Operations Squadron based out of FE Warren AFB in Cheyenne Wyoming. Upon leaving the Air Force, my wife Stephanie and I moved back to Tennessee. I worked for a large printing company in Nashville for a number of years then transitioned to a logistics company in Lebanon. I had thought about becoming a teacher for several years and finalized the decision when my wife's mother became sick at a younger age. I enrolled at Cumberland University, where my father was working at the time. I worked at Wilson Central High School for about seven years before coming to Smith County High School in 2018.
Curriculum
You can access the curriculum we will be using through the Clever link under Student sites. We will be using the Savvas link inside Clever for our online textbook. A hard copy of the text book will be provided in class.
