Class Overview
5th Grade
In math, students build confidence solving more complex problems using whole numbers, decimals, and fractions. They learn to add, subtract, multiply, and divide with accuracy, apply math skills to real-world situations, and explain their thinking using models and equations. Students also explore measurement, volume, coordinate graphs, and geometry while strengthening their problem-solving, reasoning, and critical thinking skills. These concepts help prepare them for the more advanced math they will encounter in middle school.
In science, students explore the natural world through hands-on investigations and inquiry-based learning. They study topics such as ecosystems, Earth's systems, the properties of matter, forces and motion, energy, and the relationship between the Sun, Earth, and Moon. Students develop critical thinking skills by asking questions, conducting investigations, analyzing evidence, and using scientific practices to better understand how the world around them works.
6th Grade
In math, students strengthen their understanding of numbers while expanding into new concepts such as ratios, rates, percentages, integers, and introductory algebra. They learn to solve multi-step real-world problems, analyze data, and apply mathematical reasoning to explain their thinking. Students also explore geometry, including area, surface area, and volume, while building the problem-solving and critical thinking skills needed for success in higher-level mathematics.
In science, students investigate Earth's systems, weather and climate, space science, ecosystems, and the interactions between living organisms and their environments. Through hands-on investigations and scientific inquiry, they develop skills in asking questions, analyzing data, and using evidence to explain natural phenomena. Students also strengthen their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities as they explore how science helps us understand and care for the world around us.
Hi everyone! I’m Mrs. Ashley Smith, and I am thrilled to welcome you to a brand-new school year. 5th and 6th grade are huge transitional years, and I can't wait to dive into exciting experiments, problem-solving, and discovery with my students! I am married to Chris Smith & we have 3 daughters: Emma (20), Bailey, aka "B" (14), Taylor (7).
This school isn't just where I work—it's home! My family’s roots run deep here: my grandfather, my father, my husband, and I all walked these same halls as students, and two of my daughters have since graduated from here as well. Being able to give back to the community that raised me is one of my greatest blessings.
College Education: Tennessee Technology University, B.Ed.
Cumberland University, M.Ed.
Experience: This is my 17th year at our school and my 16th year of teaching!
Teaching Philosophy: Math and science are all about curiosity, trial, and error. I aim to create a classroom environment where students aren't afraid to make mistakes, ask big questions, and discover how the world works. All I ask from you is that you try and never say I can't!
When I’m not in the classroom breaking down math equations or conducting science experiments, you can usually find me:
⛪ At Church
🌾 On the Farm
🦅 SCHS Bleachers: My daughter Bailey is a Freshman at SCHS. She is on the Lady Owls Basketball, Softball, & Volleyball teams.
Color: Blue
Drink: Water or Dr. Pepper Zero
Sweet Treat: Chocolate or Strawberry Ice Cream
College Team: Vanderbilt! (Anchor Down!)
Favorite Subject(s): Math & Science, of course! 🧮🧪
Fun Fact About Me: I was born on a military base in 29 Palms, California.
Simple Request: I do ask that you refrain from contacting me on any social media platform along with respecting my time as a sports mom at any of my children's sporting events. I will always welcome a hello, but please do not try to use that time as a conference. I have always been a coach and am looking forward to this time as a crazy spectator.
Please email with any questions/concerns. I will respond within a 24-hour window, Monday-Thursday, with Friday emails being returned the following Monday.
