Topic 2-2 “Solve Equations with Variables on Both Sides”
Standard : 8.EE.C.7b: Solve linear equations with rational number coefficients, including equations whose solutions require expanding expressions using the distributive property and collecting like terms.
Objective
Solve equations with like terms on both sides of the equation
Make sense of scenarios and represent them with equations
Essential Understanding
To solve a linear equation that has variable terms on both sides of the equation, first use inverse operations to move all variable terms to one side of the equation and constant terms to the other. Then, isolate the variable.
Essential Question: How do you use inverse operations to solve equations with variables on both sides?

Topic 2-3 “Solve Multi-Step equations”
Standard : 8.EE.C.7b: Solve linear equations with rational number coefficients, including equations whose solutions require expanding expressions using the distributive property and collecting like terms.
Objective
Plan multiple solution pathways and choose one to find the solution
Essential Understanding
The distributive property is an important tool for simplifying expressions and combining like terms.
Essential Question: How can you use the distributive property to solve multistep equations?

Topic 2-4 “ Equations with No Solutions of Infinitely many solutions”
Standard : 8.EE.C.7a: Give examples of linear equations in one variable with one solution, infinitely many solutions, or no solutions. Show which of these possibilities is the case by successively transforming the given equation into simpler forms, until an equivalent equation of the form x=a, a=a or a=b results (Where a and b are different numbers).
Objective
Determine the number of solutions to an equation
Essential Understanding
Equations with one variable can have zero, one, or infinitely many solutions.
Essential Question: Will one variable equations always have only one solution?
