As the IEP/Transition Coordinator at Smith County High School, I coordinate and develop IEPs for students receiving special education services. I work closely with students, families, teachers, administrators, related service providers, and support staff to ensure each student’s IEP is individualized, compliant, and useful in guiding instruction and support.

My responsibilities include gathering and reviewing student data, developing measurable goals, identifying appropriate services and accommodations, supporting staff with IEP implementation, and helping our special education team monitor students’ progress toward their goals and objectives. I also assist with the development and implementation of behavior intervention plans and work with the team to problem-solve when students need additional academic, behavioral, or functional support.

I work with eighth-grade teachers, students, and families to help make the transition into high school as smooth as possible. Once students arrive at the high school, I collaborate with our school counselors to develop schedules that support their individual needs and required services. I also serve as a freshman mentor, helping students adjust to the expectations, routines, and responsibilities of high school.

Transition planning is a major part of my role. I help students explore their strengths, interests, and goals while preparing for college, career training, employment, independent living, and community involvement. I also serve as the Upper Cumberland Work-Based Learning LEAD for Special Education, supporting schools and educators in creating meaningful work-based learning opportunities for students with disabilities.

In addition, I oversee our school-based enterprise, Smith County Custom Details and Designs. Through the business, students gain hands-on work experience while developing employability skills such as communication, teamwork, responsibility, problem-solving, time management, and customer service.

My goal is for every student to leave high school with stronger skills, greater confidence, and a realistic plan for what comes next.
