Conduct Policies

Academic Honor Code

The regulations and requirements of the Smith College Academic Honor Code apply to all students on the Smith College programs abroad. The Smith College community at home and abroad maintains that any evasion of the spirit of the Academic Honor Code constitutes a violation of the Code.

The Smith College Academic Honor Code is found at: https://www.smith.edu/sao/handbook/socialconduct/honorcode.php

The Honor Code standards require that students practice intellectual honesty in all oral and written work. You may seek the advice of a faculty member or a tutor regarding written work; and you may seek assistance from friends and/or local residents in understanding particular linguistic, cultural or social topics. When quoting from secondary sources in a course assignment or paper, you are expected to follow the format suggested by the instructor of the course; in case of continuing doubt, you may consult with the Director.

Examples of specific infractions of the Honor Code particularly relevant to students abroad include:

  • the submission of a paper that is not your own work;

  • the submission of the same paper for more than one course;

  • the use of outside sources—such as websites, secondary materials, or another student’s findings—without proper attribution;

  • receiving extensive revisions and/or assistance from a member of a host family or a friend;

  • using translations or published notes without specific permission from the instructors;

If you have any questions regarding intellectual honesty, please consult with your Director. In cases of a suspected violation of the Smith Academic Honor Code, the Director will inform the Dean for International Study and a process for determining the nature of the violation will be followed. In extreme cases, the violation may be referred to the Academic Honor Board, a committee of the Smith Student Government Association (SGA).

Smith Student Code of Conduct

As a student on a Smith College program, you are expected to conduct yourself in a manner compatible with the program and its reputation, with local laws and regulations, and with Smith College’s own regulations. The Smith College Code of Student Conduct is found at:

In cases of academic or personal misconduct, you should know that the Director has the right and responsibility to implement a range of sanctions and in severe cases, in consultation with the Smith College administration, to require withdrawal from the program. In the case of involuntary withdrawal from the program, no credit will be granted and no fees will be refunded. Please review the content of the Participation Agreement in your post-acceptance materials in SITES as a reminder of these policies.

In severe cases, an incident may also prompt reporting to the Smith College Conduct Board, also a committee of the Smith SGA. In this unlikely event, please consult with the by-laws of the Smith SGA Constitution relevant to the College Conduct Board:
