About our Choirs: Nurturing a Love of Music

St. Mary's International School is located in Tokyo, Japan. We are an all-boy's school with enrollment of nearly 1000 students in grades K-12 and are fortunate to have many opportunities for students to participate in the fine arts. The choirs of St. Mary's International School seek to nurture a love of music among its members with a mission to promote community service and global awareness. Students have the opportunity to rehearse and perform the world's great classical choral works as well as light, popular works.

Elementary Choir

St. Mary's Elementary Choir includes 47 singers from Grades 3, 4, and 5. They rehearse once weekly and will perform at the Elementary Choral Festival as well as at the Spring Luncheon and Spring Concert.

Middle School

The Middle School boasts three choirs: the Grade 6 Middle School Choir, where the members gain the basic choral skills in two and three part singing; the Grade 7 Middle School Choir and Grade 8 Middle School Choir. These choirs participate in the Middle School Choral Festival and also perform at the St. Mary's Christmas and Spring Concerts as well as at various assemblies throughout the school year. Handbell Choir is also offered as a performing ensemble.

High School

The St. Mary’s Handbell Choir was one of the founding members of the Japan Handbell Association nearly 50 years ago. The bell choir has performances throughout the Tokyo area as well as overseas. They have participated in the Heritage Festivals, receiving numerous gold awards for their outstanding performances.

The St. Mary's Men's Choir is a non-auditioned group of over 100 students from grades 9-12. In past years, the group has participated in the Heritage Festival and Pacific Basin Music Festival, where they have received highest rankings, along with the St. Mary's Varsity Ensemble.

The Varsity Ensemble is St. Mary's auditioned vocal group that has participated in ACDA division and national conventions as well as numerous choral festivals, including the Budapest Choral Competition and, Heritage Festival, and the Festival of Gold. They have performed at the opening of the EARCOS convention as well as at the International School of Bangkok and the NIST International School. This past summer, they were invited to perform at the ANCA (Australia National Choral Association) Choralfest and the Pemulwuy Men's Choir Festival in Brisbane.

Joint Extra-curricular Activities

The International Show Choir is an auditioned mixed choir that performs classical in addition to choreographed popular music. Students from Seisen International School and the International School of the Sacred Heart also participate in this 32 voice ensemble. In the past, the group has received top gold ratings at the Heritage Festival as well as at the Festival of Gold.
