The following documents give a brief overview of Standard Level and Higher Level Physics, including a breakdown of the topics covered and the time requirements and point distribution of the final assessments:
The 2016 IB Physics Guide contains detailed information on all of the requirements for IB Physics, including the syllabi for each topic.
You will need:
A binder or other organizer for handouts, quizzes, etc.
A separate notebook dedicated solely to Physics class. An iPad or other tablet computer is an acceptable substitute.
Laptop. You must bring one every day, even if you have an iPad/tablet.
Selection of pens and pencils. For exams, you must have either a pencil or erasable ink.
Ruler or other straight edge. Do not underestimate the importance of a ruler on exams.
Microsoft Office - available for free on the school website. Passkey: TitansAreBest
Scientific calculator. Most students use a Texas Instruments TI-84, but here is a list of acceptable IB options, please follow the guidance of your math teacher as well.
For IB Physics, we primarily use two digital textbooks. A physical textbook is also available on request, but access to the digital resources is required. Some assigned reading may be done in either text, according to your preference.
IB Physics students work many problem sets in class, mostly from Physics for the IB Diploma by K.A. Tsokos. Note that your license for this textbook will expire after you finish the course, so please discard the pdf when you leave St. Mary's. You can also access an online version through the Learning Commons website. Just search for "Tsokos" and "physics" and it should come right up.
Purchase a physical textbook here - NOT REQUIRED
The second digital textbook can be found at www.kognity.com. Just log in with your school Google account. You will find your Physics class on the dashboard. Kognity is used for reading assignments as well as quizzes and problem sets. Where the Tsokos text is a more traditional textbook, Kognity includes interactive tools and videos that some students may find more engaging.
Both textbook resources are used extensively.
Note: Do not access IB past paper questions from random websites for practice purposes. They are explicitly violating the IB's copyright, and often provide content that is no longer on the IB syllabus and therefore no longer relevant for the current syllabus. Mr. Van Loh can provide you with all the practice questions you will ever need via multiple up-to-date textbooks.
This website provides most of the materials that you will need for the course, but homework assignments and other time-sensitive materials will be communicated by Google Classroom.
Google Chat is used to support questions that students might have during and outside of class. Anyone may ask/answer a question any time! All questions and answers are reviewed and Mr. Van Loh often jumps in with detailed answers.

We use Logger Pro to collect and analyze data from various Vernier sensors and other sources, and to analyze videos.
Follow the link below to download the file you need for your operating system:
Open the file and enter the password: experiment
After installation, you will need to update Logger Pro. Please download the appropriate update file from here.
Your school account gives you unlimited storage on Google Drive, which you should take advantage of. This software will allow you to treat Google Drive (mostly) like a jump drive or external hard drive. It's very useful when documenting your data collection, but you should probably just use it for everything (trust me).
Microsoft Office - available for free! Go to www.office.com and login using your school password. Once you have successfully logged in, you will find a download link in the upper right hand corner, as shown in the image below.
